Welcome to the Writing Center!

This website is intended to help students at Wheaton (and other visitors) as they work to become more proficient with their writing.

As a Christian college, Wheaton remains committed to the belief that God cares about words, and therefore His people should care about words. In Genesis we read how God spoke the material universe into being through three powerful words, "Let there be..." And in the Gospel of John, Jesus Himself is referred to as "the Word made flesh." Humans use words because they are created in the image of God. As stewards of the gifts our Creator has given us -- including the gift of language -- we take seriously the challenge of using God-given gifts well.

As a liberal arts college, Wheaton affirms that the best kind of learning happens in the context of community. For all the informational benefits of the Internet, it is no substitute for the face-to-face transformation that comes from learning together. Person-formation and spiritual growth -- the hallmarks of Christian liberal arts learning -- involve students who are hungry for wisdom and mentors who are worthy to impart knowledge. Jesus affirmed this approach to learning and modeled it with his disciples.

At the Writing Center, we believe in one-on-one interaction between a writer and a tutor. This remains the best way to wrestle with words on a page. The information provided on the pages of this website is intended to complement the hard but rewarding work of the tutorial. Although it may be somewhat daunting for the student who has never visited us, the tutorial actually is intended to affirm your strengths and direct your abilities as a writer. Toward that end, we exist.

We look forward to seeing you and your writing!

Cordially,
Jeffry C. Davis, Ph. D.
Assistant Professor of English
Director of the Writing Center
