Community Calendar

The Community Calendar is an hourly feature on WETN radio. WETN uses this feature to promote selected events happening on the Wheaton College campus and surrounding communities in the Chicago area. Announcements on the Community Calendar run 1-2 times daily up to 2 weeks in advance of the event. Event information is also listed here on the online Community Calendar. To submit an announcement, you may email WETN with the information or fax it to 630-752-5286. Information about your event should be submitted three weeks prior to the date of the event. There is no charge for events promoted on the WETN Community Calendar. Because of this, announcements are not guaranteed. Our underwriting program offers guaranteed announcements.

Though some wedding traditions may have changed from the 1890s to today, the heart of a wedding is still the same. See firsthand during “The Wedding Handkerchief” at Kline Creek Farm. Tours begin on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Of course, weddings in Victorian times included actions with significant meaning. A bride was sure to carry a handkerchief. An old sentiment stated that a bride must take care to shed a few tears before the groom kissed her, as tears cried before the wedding meant none after. Learn how a young woman may have made her own handkerchief from linen or silk fabric and handmade lace or tatting work. See the house decorated for a wedding — take in the fragrance of fresh flowers, see the table set for a special meal, and hear the “Bridal Chorus” playing on the pump organ. Just like today’s weddings, celebrations ranged from quiet affairs to large gatherings. Learn about details from invitation styles to the gifts a couple received.

Are you looking for that something new, that eye-catching touch for your garden? Then go native with plants from the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s native-plant sale at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook. The sale will feature a wide variety of native flowers, grasses, ferns and trees suitable for both sunny and shady conditions.
Why native plants? Having thrived in this region for thousands of years, they are well-adapted to the environment and require a fraction of the care required by turf grasses and traditional framed beds. They can attract and sustain wildlife from goldfinches to tiger swallowtail butterflies, and provide unusual textures and colors, like the striking bright blooms of wild bergamot and the fine-textured tufts of prairie dropseed grass.

See a soaring red-tailed hawk, launch a model glider to new heights or, on a clear day, catch a glimpse of the Chicago skyline from the top of the Greene Valley hill at Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Naperville. The hill opens to the public on May 3 and will be open Saturdays and Sundays. The hill is a former landfill that is now the site of a gas-to-energy plant; disposal operations began in 1974 and ended in 1996. Revenue generated from the landfill was applied toward construction costs; as a result, tax dollars were not used for the recreational developments. With over 25,000 acres, 140 miles of trail and 60 preserves all right at your feet, there's a perfect way to enjoy DuPage County's forest preserves that's just waiting for you.
