Community Development

The community development emphasis focuses on mission as transformation and is for those interested in careers in relief, development, economic justice, agriculture, health, church planting, cross-cultural teaching, and other holistic ministries with the poor. The key question explored in this field is “What is the role of the Church in response to human need and how can it facilitate transformational development in communities?”

Skills gained include an understanding of the biblical basis for involvement in the developing world, both at a personal and systemic level; knowledge of how to partner with the various expressions of the local church; a grasp of how to appropriately demonstrate the gospel through deed as well as word; and knowledge of how to be agents of positive transformation in a professional context. Case studies of development are explored. Worldview, cultural values, folk religions, and problems of health are considered as they relate to effective holistic cross-cultural mission and ministry.
