American University - School of International Service*

Washington, D.C.

The International Development Program is designed for students and faculty concerned with analyzing and participating in economic, environmental, social, and political change, with particular emphasis on improving the opportunities for the poor and vulnerable of the Third World. Concern for the poor and vulnerable underscores a distinguishing feature of the International Development Program -- the recognition among students and faculty that development brings important costs as well as benefits, and that these are not equally shared. Given this perspective, development becomes an ethical and political as well as a technical undertaking.

Boston University - School of Public Health*

The Department of International Health (DIH) grew out of the Center for International Health and became an academic department in 1995. Cornell University*

The Master of Professional Studies program provides graduate level training for mid-career rural and community decision makers and practitioners. The curriculum affords students an opportunity to deal with and plan for the multidimensional challenges rural communities face now and in the future. The program's students have experience in public, non-profit, or other organizations dealing with the problems of rural areas and communities.

The Master of Professional Studies in International Development program provides an interdisciplinary program of study for those who are experienced in international development and are seeking to upgrade or update their educational qualifications. Training is offered in both a substantive specialization (such as population, regional planning, science and technology policy, or nutrition), and in areas of analysis for implementing objectives (development administration and planning, development economics, development politics, development sociology, or international communication). A specialized concentration in some area of development policy, such as women in development, may serve as the student's concentration with the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies and the student's advisor.

Eastern was the first Christian college in the United States to develop programs focused on the introduction and management of holistic, community-based development.  The course of study goes far beyond simply retooling a traditional degree.  Courses are now integrated to provide focus and cohesion.  The themes of urbanization, servanthood, empowerment, globalization, reconciliation, and multi-culturalism are a part of each course.  For more than 13 years Eastern has been sending agents of change around the world to participate in and facilitate economic development and missions.
