Honors in History
The honors thesis project provides qualified history majors an opportunity to undertake serious, independent scholarship under the supervision of a faculty mentor. For their honors project, completed during the senior year, students choose a subject for independent study, develop the necessary bibliography in consultation with their honors adviser, carry out rigorous research in primary and secondary sources, and write a substantive paper.
When successfully completed and defended, the student graduates with honors in history. While open to all qualified students, the honors project is especially beneficial for students considering graduate study. Majors with a minimum of 24 hours in history and a GPA of at least 3.5 overall and 3.7 in history courses may apply during fall semester or early in the spring semester of the junior year to participate in the departmental honors program. Consult the Honors in History section of the Handbook for more information and an application.
