Wheaton College Health Insurance Requirements

Wheaton College believes it is essential for all students to be protected against high costs for accidents, illnesses or ongoing health needs. The College offers a Student Health Plan that will provide worldwide protection to help cover the costs of treatment for an injury or sickness including intercollegiate athletic injuries. Please refer to the enclosed Insurance Benefit Summary for an outline of the plan.

All special students taking nine or more credit hours and degree-seeking students are automatically enrolled and billed for the Wheaton College Student Health Plan unless they certify that they have comparable coverage by completing the online waiver form . Instructions for submitting the waiver are available at www.wheaton.edu/healthsvcs . The deadline for waiver submission is September 12, 2008. A $50.00 late waiver fee will be charged to your student account for a waiver submitted September 13, 2008 through September 26, 2008. Subtracting the fee from the total bill cannot be a substitute for completing the waiver. Failure to complete the waiver by the final deadline will result in the mandatory purchase of the College's health plan without the possibility of later waiver, refund, or cancellation. It is essential for each student to have his/her own insurance card including the prescription card if it is separate from the medical insurance card.

Please check with your insurance company before making a determination to waive coverage. Out-of-state HMO's and similar plans are not considered adequate insurance because their benefits are very restrictive outside the home area. They usually require a referral and/or authorization from the home primary care physician for anything other than an emergency, and often the emergency must be life-threatening for benefits to apply. Additional information regarding HMO's and the Wheaton College student health insurance requirements can be accessed on the website at www.wheaton.edu/healthsvcs .
