From the
Desk of the Director - January 2007
News and resources for the
Wheaton College student community from Dr. Wendy Bisset,
M.D., Director of the Student Health Center.
Influenza vaccine: It is NOT too late to receive a flu shot
in January! No appointment necessary. Walk-in visits are
welcomed.
Mumps: We are thankful that the outbreak has significantly
diminished since 11/06.
Update & Information [link: see listed below]
Methicillin Resistant
Staphylococcal Aureus (MRSA): We have
had several confirmed cases of MRSA skin infections on campus
Fall 2006. We encourage students to continue to follow good
hygiene practices and to visit the Health Center if they
have any suspicious lesions.
NEW IMMUNIZATIONS: We have available, upon request, recently
ACIP endorsed vaccines against meningitis, human papilloma
virus, and whooping cough.
- Meningococcal
vaccine (Menactra) prevents meningitis (a
brain infection). For students who are living in dormitories,
it is highly recommended due to an increased risk of this
serious infection. Refer to these websites for more information:
- Human Papilloma
Virus vaccine (Gardasil) is a recently new
immunization as of June 2006 which prevents cervical cancer.
The vaccine is to be considered for any female student who
is under twenty-seven years of age. Refer to the following
websites to determine if you are at risk and for further
information:
- Tdap vaccine (Adacel)
against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping
cough) is recommended (instead of Td – or
a tetanus shot) during the ten year booster and to consider
earlier especially for childcare providers, overseas travel,
or healthcare workers. Refer to the following website for
more information.
