The Major In Environmental Studies

A core curriculum of 36 hours provides a unified presentation of environmental studies as a coherent framework of concepts, theories, facts, skills, and values essential to all students pursuing a vocational calling in this field. Beyond the core, an additional 10 hours are selected in one of three curricular tracks, biology, geology, or social science, for advanced training and preparation in more specialized interests. Elective choices in any track may be modified with approval of the Environmental Studies Director and appropriate departmental faculty. All students in the Wheaton Environmental Studies Program gain experience in research, management, and development applications in environmental studies, acquire skill in the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and quantitative statistical analysis and experimental design, perform practical environmental services, and develop a personal self-understanding of Christian mission within their professional identify as environmental scientists and scholars.
