English Major with Teaching Concentration
(Requirements
for English Major with Teaching Concentration)
Overview
The
English major with teaching concentration prepares students
to become proficient in the skills of reading closely, thinking
critically, writing clearly, and speaking precisely. These
skills prove vital for life and for teaching English. The
central goal for this concentration is to prepare competent
teachers who can instruct others in the acquisition of these
foundational literacy skills.
The curriculum
for English majors with the teaching concentration includes
the reading of significant texts (both canonical and non-canonical)
from many genres, periods, and cultures, as well as preparation
for effective teaching. A historical framework will govern
the study of both English and American literature, with required
courses in Non-Western Literature, Adolescent Literature,
and Shakespeare. A theoretical framework will govern the study
of English education, with required courses in Methods of
Teaching English and Composition Theory, Practice, and Pedagogy.
In all of their coursework, students are encouraged to consider
the ways in which ultimately they might implement what they
learn in their own classrooms.
The English
major with a teaching concentration is for students who love
reading, thinking, writing, speaking, and learning to such
a degree that they envision themselves helping others to love
those things as well. Such students are encouraged to see
their course work as preparation for a Christian vocation
in the teaching of English.
