Frequently Asked Questions
Location
and Time of Chapel:
The undergraduate chapel is held in Edman Chapel, located
on the corner of Franklin and Washington Streets, from 10:35
a.m. - 11:15 a.m., Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. During
special services series, chapels are also held on Tuesday
or Thursday.
Visitor
Seating:
Due to 'assigned seating' for students and few open seats,
visitors are encouraged to stand at the back of the main floor
or in the aisles of the balcony until students have taken
their seats. Following the chimes, visitors are welcome to
fill in empty seats.
Ordering
Chapel Tapes:
Pending the speaker's approval, tapes of the chapel messages
can be ordered through Wheaton College Media Resources at
(630) 752-5061.
See www.wheaton.edu/media/duplication/duplication.htm
for prices. Please provide the chapel date and name of the
speaker, if available.

also makes selected chapel messages available over the internet
in audio form via the WETN web site. To listen to archived

What
is the process and timeframe for choosing chapel guest speakers?
Many factors contribute to the decision-making related to
each year's chapel program. The challenge is to provide spiritual
'feeding' high in quality, with balance and variety, that
points to the Lord and contributes to our worship of Him.
This translates into a program that includes campus ministries
and academic departments, guest speakers and musicians, a
balance of genders, minorities, majority, and international
speakers, as well as chapels designed to expose students from
20-some denominations to the various Christian traditions
(liturgical, charismatic, African American, Methodist, Presbyterian,
etc.). Music will vary between traditional hymns and contemporary
worship bands,
Conservatory
choirs and ensembles, to the jazz band and gospel choir. Messages
will range from biblical preaching, student testimonies, a
focus on world issues and needs, to issues at home and on
campus. All are meant to lend to our understanding of God,
the reality of the circumstances of our lives as His disciples
on earth, and the ultimate worship that is due His name.
The process
of compiling the chapel calendar usually begins in May and
extends through the summer. If you have a guest speaker or
musician you would like to suggest, please feel free to send
or drop by a donated tape or CD of the speaker / musician
to assist Chaplain Kellough in making a decision related to
their fit to Wheaton's campus culture. (Because of the volume
of materials received, we find it difficult to insure that
materials will be returned to the sender - hence the 'donated'
materials.)
Opportunity
for Involvement
The Student Chapel Advisory Committee meets with Chaplain
Kellough every other week to review the chapel program and
offer constructive feedback and ideas for future chapels.
The Chaplain is most helped to hear from a balance of student
voices - men and women, minority and majority students, from
every class - freshman to senior - all with a common interest
in the spiritual nurture of their peers. Meetings usually
take place at 4:15 PM on Mondays in the Chaplain's Office.
Feel free to stop by the Chaplain's Office and pick up an
application if you're interested in participating.
Church Directory
Wheaton College is a community of Christians who work,
play, study, and worship together. Three times a week (Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday) we gather in one place (Edman Chapel)
to worship. Throughout each week and during the course of
the year there are other College sponsored opportunities for
worship, prayer, and Christian fellowship on our campus.
But Wheaton
College is not a church. We intentionally refrain from scheduling
on-campus Sunday morning worship services. Students are encouraged
to participate in the worship, life, and ministry of a local
church. The benefit is mutual as students gain from the fellowship
of a church and churches appreciate the involvement of students.
A directory of local churches is available in the Chaplain's
Office or on-line at at www.wheaton.edu/sao/orientation/churchdirectory.htm.
From time
to time you may find places like Edman Chapel, Pierce Chapel,
or Barrows Auditorium being used by a local church for Sunday
morning worship. While there are churches that rent College
facilities on a temporary basis and students are free to attend
these services, it should be understood that these are rental
arrangements and not college sponsored events. It should also
be noted that "College Church in Wheaton" (at the
corner of College Avenue and Washington) is not owned or operated
by Wheaton College. It is an excellent Church with strong
historic ties to Wheaton College, but it is an independent
local church.
