Dr.
Stephen Kellough
- Now
in his nineteenth year as the Chaplain of Wheaton College,
with almost 90 chapels to oversee every year, and 1,620 chapels
under his belt, Chaplain Kellough continues to possess a certain
mystique that keeps students guessing about the real man behind
the podium! Though possessing a strength of presence and dignified
decorum, Dr. Kellough's side interests belie the fact that
there is more to the man than meets the eye in chapel. Perhaps
it's his Harley and his past trip to Sturgis, SD, or maybe
his silver Camaro, or his dry humor that can defuse the power
of a chapel prank in a matter of seconds
.
Whatever
the source of the mystique, it makes students like 'Chappy
K' all the more, and causes him to be a regularly sought actor
in the annual class films! Students who have had the opportunity
to come to know him, invariably appreciate his wit and wisdom,
and value the time given. He is a gracious man, well-read,
and able to comment with knowledge and understanding on a
wide breadth of topics. He is sincere in his desire to serve
well and takes his chapel responsibilities very seriously
out of honor to God and respect for the students. As a pastor,
Chaplain Kellough's compassion is revealed in his prayers,
as one who listens well and understands the human condition.
Dr. Kellough's
interest in scholarship and love of books and reading, lend
well to his pastorate among faculty and staff. His spiritual
maturity and wisdom born of experience assist in managing
a program that is mindful of colleagues and students alike.
Prior to Wheaton, Dr. Kellough served in parish ministry in
the Presbyterian Church USA. His decision to become the Chaplain
at Wheaton was influenced by a one-year sabbatical from his
church, during which time he served as chaplain and professor
at Tyndale Theological Seminary in Amsterdam, Holland. In
coming to Wheaton, he finds that he enjoys the stimulation
of an academic environment, and dialoguing with creative,
sharp minds of students, faculty, and staff in the context
of community. His sense of calling to the pastorate has been
affirmed through ministry within the college setting.
Significantly
influenced during his time as a student at Wheaton by the
life and ministry of his predecessor Chaplain Evan Welsh,
Chaplain Kellough has been given the opportunity to in turn,
use his gifts to influence the next generation. - To this
end, he continues to serve faithfully and well.
Gary
LaVanchy
For the
past 8 years, Gary LaVanchy has served as the Discipleship
Small Groups (DSG) Coordinator. He serves as one well-equipped
for the role, due to the seriousness with which he himself
desires to be an apprentice of Christ (in the words of Dallas
Willard), aided by a coach's heart to encourage others to
live up to the fullness of their design and purpose before
God. As someone who walked the hallowed halls of Wheaton as
a student himself, Gary is well-respected and wears many hats
on campus. His heart for discipleship shows whether coaching
on the football team, teaching geology in a lab, meeting one-on-one
with DSG Cabinet members, lending support to the GRAD Student
Ministries, planning a Spring Break missions trip, or leading
worship at the weekly football chapels. From his life, one
gets the impression that discipleship is a lifestyle that
is intentionally lived out with discipline and compassion,
and with the goal of having Jesus always in focus. Aside from
ministry in the Chaplain's office and the life of the campus
community, Gary has been known to seek sanctuary on his surfboard
in the blue waters off the coast of southern California or
the African waves of Senegal.
Marilyn
Brenner
Now in
her 11th year as Office Coordinator in the Chaplain's Office,
Marilyn has found that her years growing up in a pastor's
family have lent understanding to the role of ministry at
Wheaton. Her father's pastoral heart for people and her parents'
own example of faithful ministry have given her an example
and standard for investment in the lives of others. Of the
various aspects of her work, Marilyn enjoys the opportunity
to think creatively with staff and students in the Chaplain's
Office to discern the Lord's plans and purposes related to
the spiritual nurture of the campus. Three times a week, chapel
is 'served' in faith that it will spiritually feed and further
those in attendance. In addition to attending to the details
related to chapel, Marilyn enjoys interacting with students,
faculty, and staff within the context of everyday life in
community at Wheaton.
