Scope & Content
This collection consists of audio recordings, a videotape, several prayer letters, and a photograph of Huggins. The recordings, comprising the majority of the collection, consist of an oral history with Huggins (see detailed description which follows) and of the radio program Family Portraits segment hosted by Dennis Okholm in which she discusses her translation work in the Philippines, personal background and conversion, the demonstration of grace in her life, and the role of language in spiritual understanding and experience. The video tape is of her untitled chapel address at Wheaton College on March 21, 1997, in which she described her journey to Christian faith, call to be a missionary, and work as a translator in the Philippines.
Jacqueline Huggins was interviewed by Paul A. Ericksen on March 21, 1997, at the Archives office. The events described in the interview cover the time period 1949-1997.

Sister's conversion, lack of personal experience of racial discrimination for
being an African American woman, attitudes of Bible colleges and missions toward those who
are divorced, transfer to Fort Wayne Bible College, education and training for missions, interest
in languages and translation, attending Urbana '79, selecting Wycliffe Bible Translators,
Wycliffe's training and course work, doubting her call to missions, being assigned to work on the
Kagayanen language, translating the New Testament (process, addition of Genesis, philosophy),
Kagayanen church, translators' involvement in church life and their own ministry, limitations on
church involvement due to nature of research visa, personal evangelism, translation obstacles
(lack of people's interest in reading and language, lack of pride in group, lack of motivation to
read for content), preference to speak in other languages (trade language, national language or
English)

Difficult biblical concepts to translate (Son of Man in particular), meaning-based emphasis vs. literal and grammatical precision, consideration of a potential but ultimately inadequate redemptive analogy, personal benefits of reading Scripture in another language, attending Urbana '96, perceived racial attitudes of missionary colleagues (recounting to her their experiences with African Americans, talking down, stereotyped images, not taking her seriously, higher administrative support), comparison of Filipinos' openness with her and with Caucasian missionaries (being used as an intermediary by Filipinos), translation goals for next term and long-range goal (teaching translation as part of seminary program in Nairobi)
