Scope and Content
This collection consists of correspondence, promotional materials, books, posters, telegrams, newspaper and magazine clippings, minutes, financial records, photographs, slides, films, videotapes, audio tapes, and phonograph records, all related to the operations of Hour of Decision, Ltd., later renamed the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Ltd., in Australia.
The organization of the records in this collection is largely that of the original order as received from the donor and only in part the creation of the archivist. Folder titles supplied by the donor have been retained. Some materials have been removed from their original binders, i.e., photographs from ring binders or procedure books from their oversize binders for storage purposes. Newspaper and magazine clippings have been placed in the clipping file. Duplicates, receipts, and material unrelated to the BGEA Ltd. office's operation have been discarded at the request of the donor. Large-donor letters which were primarily form letters were sampled; the remainder of these were discarded at the donor's request. There was some duplication between slides and proof sheets; however, neither of these have been discarded. Some photographic proof sheets of the 1968 and 1969 crusades were discarded because of deterioration due to improper photographic processing. Procedure books for two Leighton Ford reachouts in the early 1980s were transferred to Collection 16.
Series I: BGEA Ltd. office correspondence
Arrangement: Subdivided into sections by the following time periods: 1958-1966, 1966-1968,
1968-1970, 1970-1973, 1974-1975, 1974-1978, 1976-1978, 1979-1986. Within each time period
the records have been arranged alphabetically according to the divisions by which they were
filed, i.e., BGEA Team, Challenge Films, Decision, Foreign Offices, etc. (documents about film
distribution or Decision magazine subscriptions, for example, appear in each of the eight
sections. The one exception to this arrangement is the 1979-1986 set of files, received and
processed later, whose contents correspond to the earlier sets but whose order, kept as it was
received, is different.
Date Range: 1958-1986
Volume: 23.0 cubic feet
Boxes: 1-18, 33-40
Geographic coverage: Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific region
Type of documents: Correspondence, promotional materials, telegrams, newspaper and
magazine clippings, reports, minutes, financial records
Correspondents: Primarily Dorothy Turner (1959-1966), Barry Berryman (1966-1981), and
Helen Verco (1981-1986). Also includes BGEA figures such as: Joel Aarsvold, Don Bailey,
Irmhild Berend (German office), Dave Barr )WWP), Cliff Barrows, Ralph Bell, John Blake
(Spanish office), Bill Brown (WWP), Blair Carlson, Stan Conway (New Zealand liaison), Jack
Dain, John Dillon, Alan Emery, Leighton Ford, Billy Graham, Kenneth Harrison (Australian
Decision editor), Henry Holley, V. Sam Jones (Hong Kong office), Paul Kurtz (WWP), Kenneth
McVety (Japan office), Dan Neusch (South American office), Warwick Olson (Australian
Decision editor), Roger Palms (Decision), Norman Pell (re Leighton Ford's reachouts), John
Pollock, John R. Reid, Charlie Riggs, Maurice Rowlandson (London office), George Beverly
Shea, Walter Smyth, Stephanie Wills (Montreat office), George Wilson, and others.
Descriptive limits: Boxes 1 through 18 are described at the folder level, while boxes 33 through
40 only at the box level
Notes: Routine correspondence predominates in this series, as the Australian office
communicated with the BGEA's offices in the US, BGEA team members, and other international
offices, such as those in Argentina, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, and Japan (during the
1980 crusade), both to intersect with activities and planning with the main Minneapolis
headquarters and other offices, remain informed of developments, and coordinate its own
Australian and regional activities. There is also communication with churches and offices in
New Guinea, New Zealand, and other South Pacific islands. And, not least, there is intra-Australian correspondence from interested individuals and between the members of the
Association's Board of Directors. The correspondence spans routine office matters, planning,
Decision magazine production and subscriptions, regional attendance at international evangelism
congresses, film distribution in Australia and the region, radio broadcasts, travel reservations,
interaction with churches, letters of appreciation, requests for BGEA publicity material, etc. The
late-1985 and 1986 correspondence also records the closing of the Australia operation and
transition or discontinuation of activities.
A major section of the collection covers the distribution of World Wide Pictures' films and videos: Souls in Conflict, The Heart is a Rebel, The Shadow of the Boomerang, The Restless Ones, For Pete's Sake, Two A Penny, Time to Run, Time For Decision, Joni, The Hiding Place, The Inside Story, The Prodigal, and others. These files include information on local and national preliminary arrangements, actual showings, and follow-up. They also include correspondence with Faith and Fact Films in Australia, Greater Union Film Distributors, Gospel Film Service Trust (a New Zealand company renamed New Life Pictures in late-1980), and World Wide Pictures in the US, with showings not only in Australia and New Zealand but also Fiji, the Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. Folder 37-5 consists of a proposal from Pilgrim International Ltd. for a film documenting Ralph Bell's 1977 crusade in the Solomon Islands.
Correspondence also documents the publication of the Australian edition of Decision magazine, including articles, essays, or testimonies sent to be published, as well as arrangements made with the Minneapolis office regarding production.
The records tell the story of radio broadcasts of the Hour of Decision in Australia, New Zealand, and the Solomon Islands, and also of one-minute radio spots by Leighton Ford (folder 40-2).
Evangelism congresses and Berryman's involvement in them are also documented in the collection, including the 1968 Asia South Pacific Congress on Evangelism (folders 2-13 through 2-26), the 1967-1968 Victoria Congress on Evangelism and Authority (folders 3-31, 4-1, and 4-2), the 1974 International Congress on World Evangelization (folders 13-46 through 13-53 and 14-1 through 14-16), 1980 Consultation on World Evangelization.(folder 35-4) including Dave Howard correspondence, Amsterdam '83 (folders 35-5,6), and Amsterdam '86 (folders 35-7,8,9).
Although the primary record of evangelistic activities appears in the Crusade Files Series which follows, the Correspondence Series also documents assorted evangelistic activities, such as Leighton Ford's reachouts (folder 34-13,14,15,16) and Luis Palau's 1982 crusade in Newcastle.
Although no folders are limited in their contents to a record of the closing of the BGEA Ltd. office at the end of 1986, various files with correspondence during 1986 reflect the conclusion of the office's responsibilities and activities.
Exceptional items: Of interest are folders 7-15 and 7-16 which include letters and published articles objecting to Billy Graham's methodology or associations. Materials in folders 13-19 through 13-32 outline the publicity arrangements and actual engagements for the 1974 Australian tour by Cliff Richard, a converted British film star and musician. Folder 33-3 includes a late-1980 news release and newspaper clipping reporting the intended transition of the Australian office to being self-supporting and Barry Berryman's resignation. Articles of incorporation of the Hour of Decision Ltd. and Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Ltd. can be found in folder 40-5 and OS 21.
Series II: Crusade files
Arrangement: Chronologically by crusade
Date Range: 1959-1980
Volume: 17.6 cubic feet
Boxes: 18-32, 41-44
Geographic coverage: Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific region
Type of documents: Correspondence, reports, meeting agendas and minutes, duplicate
materials, promotional materials, lists, telegrams, newspaper and magazine clippings minutes,
financial records, statistics, and other documents related to the planning and execution of specific
evangelistic campaigns.
Correspondents: Dorothy Turner and Barry Berryman. For the 1979 Sydney Crusade, A. Jack
Dain's correspondence predominates; other correspondents include A.J. Foote, Billy Graham,
Henry Holley, Archbishop Marcus Loane, Warwick Olson, John R. Reid, Charles Riggs, Walter
Smyth, and local crusade executives and committee chairs.
Descriptive limits: Boxes 18 through 32 are described at the folder level, while boxes 33 and
above only at the box level
Notes: This series consists of the records of specific crusades, both Graham's and his associate
evangelists, held in Australia and the South Pacific. The files thoroughly document the activities
of preparing for, executing, and following up on a crusade. They also include material on the
Schools of Evangelism, Schools of Christian Writing, and Christian Life and Witness Classes
which accompanied the crusades. The most heavily documented crusade is Billy Graham's 1979
Sydney Crusade (folders 25-12 through 25-25, all folders in boxes 26 through 31, and all folders
in boxes 41 through 44), with all the major crusade functions represented. The contents of boxes
41 through 44 were received after the Australia office was closed, but are a continuation or
overlap of the contents in boxes 25 through 31.
Exceptional items: The collection also contains taped radio spots, with brief devotional
messages or advertising the 1979 Sydney Crusade (see T1, T2, T3 and T4 in the Location
Record: Audio Tapes). A film documents one meeting of the 1968 Sydney Crusade (see F1 & F2
in the Location Record: Films). There is also a large amount of photographic documentation of
crusade activities in slides, prints, and proof sheets, covering the major Billy Graham crusades in
1959, 1968, 1969, and 1979. The one-day New South Wales Congress on Evangelization, held
on Anzac Day (April 25, 1979) is documented in folder 41-3. Folders 43-13,14 document
relations with and crusade involvement of Pentecostals and Roman Catholics.
