Brief description
The collection contains audio tapes and wire recordings, including sermons, talks, question and answer sessions, addresses delivered by Billy Graham and other BGEA staff, training sessions for crusade volunteers, discipleship sessions for new converts, and radio commercials and fifteen-minute programs at the time of crusades. The recordings extensively cover many of the BGEA's U.S. and international crusades. Of special interest are the dozens of tapes from the 1949 Los Angeles Crusade and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s invocation during the 1957 New York Crusade.


Restrictions

All materials in this collection are on deposit from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and may not be copied without written permission from the BGEA. Any researcher who wishes to request permission must get the required form from the Archives staff. It is the responsibility of the researcher to fill out the form and send it to the BGEA.



Scope and Content

Series: Audio Recordings
Arrangement: The arrangement of the collection was created by the archivist. Numerous duplicates were identified in the course of arranging the collection and were subsequently removed from the collection; many of these were recordings intended to be used for editing crusade film or video footage for television broadcasts. However, in some cases these TV versions were the only recordings remaining for a given crusade and they were therefore retained. In some cases these tapes had already been assigned T numbers; when they were removed, a gap in the numerical sequence of the collection was left. Therefore, although the collection contains a T5500, there are less tapes actually in the collection and available for researcher use.

Volume:5712 audio tapes (147 cassettes, 5026 reels. Of the reels 320 are 10" and 4706 are 7"), 60 wire recordings.
Geographic coverage: World wide
Type of documents: Recordings of BGEA related events, mainly crusade services, but also a miscellany of other types of meetings and radio broadcasts.
Subjects: BGEA evangelistic meetings, salvation, Christian faith, evangelistic work world wide
Notes: Contents of this collection consist of over 4,500 reel-to-reel and cassette audio tapes which include entire crusade services, sermons, talks, question and answer sessions, addresses delivered by Billy Graham, crusade-related radio broadcasts, crusade training classes, and other events in which Graham or associate evangelists participated. Graham's crusades are heavily although not exhaustively recorded.

The majority of recordings in the collection are of crusade meetings. However, tapes of other events are also included, so the collection is subdivided into four parts, which are arranged chronologically: I. Crusades and Other events, II. Crusade Classes, III. Crusade-related Radio Broadcasts, IV. Miscellaneous Recordings

Among the "other events" are prayer breakfasts, speeches to government bodies, awards ceremonies, professional meetings, etc. The crusade classes include counselor training sessions (for those who were to guide those responding to an invitation to make a commitment to Christ or renew a previous commitment), Christian Life & Witness classes, Bible and Nurture classes, and classes for new converts. The radio broadcasts included in the collection consist mainly of Prayer Time, a fifteen-minute program which aired during a crusade to encourage listeners to pray for the crusade. A few miscellaneous recordings round out the collection.
