Orientation #7 Interpreting & using primary sources (Educational Research Methods)
Purpose of orientation: Overview of Archives holdings, emphasize the nature of primary sources and how to interpret them (in light of their purpose, gaps in documentation, bias and points of view, conflicting information), place qualitative research on context with quantitative, experience using and interpreting primary sources. Uses 1995 Wheaton Revival materials as illustration.
Description of Orientation:
1:15-1:20 Registration, introduction and session overview
1:20-1:30 WHL (short)
1:30-1:40 Web access to the Archives and its collections
1:40-1:50 How we collect documents and data. General and revival.
1:50-1:53 1st video clip (beginning of WCF, intro of McGuire: V1, 0000-0210, 1705-1800)
1:53-2:03 Interpreting documents. Address the following questions:
2:03-2:08 2nd revival video clip (James Hahn, transition to confessions: V1, 3725-4035)
2:08-2:13 Explain exercise, divide into small groups
Your task is to identify what happened and what it meant. Maybe you have heard bits and pieces already, or perhaps you've read the book (so you'll know exactly what happened). Maybe you were there, so you know for yourself. Use the documents at hand to find out what happened.
