Exercise # 2, Wheaton revivals
Purpose of Exercise:
1. To familiarize students with the materials in the Archives about revivals at Wheaton, especially the 1995 revival
2. To give them some experience using documents
Description of Exercise:

0:15-0:30 Talked about what the Archives had on evangelism and the very little bit it had on revivals. Passed around journal from 188-1-19 as a sample of material on revivals. Show how to access Archives via the internet. Talked in detail about the history of Collection 514 and its contents.
0:30-1:05 Played segments from T14, T52, T58 and V1 from Collection 514 as samples of the contents of the collection.

1. Materials: Audio tapes. Select one or more tapes and try to determine what part music played in the revival. Choose a segment about music of not more than three minutes to play for the class and discuss that segment's significance.

5. Materials: Video tapes. View portions of one or more of the videos of the revival meetings. Report to the class on the characteristics of the meeting that struck you as significant or typical. Select a segment of not more than three minutes to play for the class that illustrates one of these characteristics.
6. Materials: E-mail reports. Read through the e-mail messages in file 1-4. Some of them deal with the Wheaton revival, some with other events happening at the same time. Report to the class on the different kind of viewpoints and reactions they represent.
7. Materials: Questionnaires and reports. Read through the letters, reports, and questionnaires in folders 1-1 and 1-10 that tell of the 1936 revival on campus. Report to the class on some of the ways the revival was similar to the 1995 revival and some ways it was different.
8. Materials: Questionnaires and reports. Read through the questionnaires in folder 1-10 that tell of the 1943 revival on campus. Report to the class on some of the ways the revival was similar to the 1995 revival and some ways it was different.
9. Materials: Questionnaires and reports. Read through the letters, reports, and questionnaires in folders 1-2, 1-3, and 1-10 that tell of the 1950 revival on campus. Report to the class on some of the ways the revival was similar to the 1995 revival and some ways it was different.
10. Materials: Questionnaires and reports. Read through the questionnaires in folder 1-10 that tell of the 1970 revival on campus. Report to the class on some of the ways the revival was similar to the 1995 revival and some ways it was different.
11. Materials: Audio tapes. Select one or more tapes that deal with events at events at Trinity International University (T7, T8, T11, T18, T33, T56). Report on the class about what happened at Trinity and play a segment of not more than three minutes about events at Trinity.
12. Materials: Audio tapes. Select one or more tapes and try to determine what were the characteristics of the confessions made during the revival played in the revival. Choose a segment about the confessions of not more than three minutes to play for the class and discuss that segment's significance.
13. Materials: Audio tapes. Listen to the tapes of interviews with chaplains from other colleges (T33, T37, T47) and describe to the class the similarities and differences of events on these campuses. Choose a segment about the confessions of not more than three minutes to play for the class and discuss that segment's significance.
14. Materials: Audio tapes. Listen to the two or more tapes of reports by Wheaton students on their trips to other campuses to report on Wheaton's revival (T12, T17, T39, T43, T49, T50, T51, T54, T60). Describe to the class the range of reactions encountered.
15. Materials: Audio tapes. The staff taped several follow-up interviews in 1997 with people they had interviewed in 1995 (T61 through T74). Listen to three or more of these tapes and describe for the class some of the attitudes people had toward the review two years after. Choose a segment about the confessions of not more than three minutes to play for the class and discuss that segment's significance.
16. Materials: Audio tapes. Select one or more tapes and try to determine what were the various attitudes of the College faculty and administrationtoward the revival. Choose a segment about the faculty of not more than three minutes to play for the class and discuss that segment's significance.
17. Materials: Paper records. This assignment involves comparing the experience of the Wheaton revival with another revival far separated in time and space. Folders 188-1-19 and 188-2-24 contains a handwritten journal and a sermon by Jonathan Goforth describing his experience of the Korean revival of 1910. After listening to some of the other students in the class give their reports on the 1995 Wheaton revival, compare and contrast what you have read in these folders about the Korean revival.
