Genealogical Resources in the Archives

Wayne's
lecture appeared in the Summer 2003 edition of Forum. |
Finding family roots has been popular with the American public since Alex Halley
wrote the book Roots. After the television series by the same name hundreds
of people began contacting libraries and archives with questions about their
ancestors. The BGC Archives also began to receive more and more genealogical
reference requests which required the staff to search for materials which would
be helpful for these family historians. The Archives staff wanted to make the
genealogical community aware of these materials but an in-depth survey of what
the Archives had had not previously been done. In the Spring of 2002 reference
archivist, Wayne Weber began to gather information on archival collections with
genealogical materials. Last October 2002 he presented this information in a
lecture, Finding
Your Family Roots in the Billy Graham Center Archives, which he gave
at Wheaton College. Wayne also gave this lecture on June 14, 2003 to the South
Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society in their new facility in Hazel
Crest, Illinois. The lecture was published by the Federation of Genealogical
Society in the Summer and Fall 2003 issues of the Forum magazine.
