All materials in this collection are on deposit from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and may not be copied without written permission from the BGEA. Any researcher who wishes to request permission must get the required form from the Archives staff. It is the responsibility of the researcher to fill out the form and send it to the BGEA.| Other significant information | |
| Because of the crusades that the BGEA was continually holding around the world, not to mention the public interest in Graham and the never ending stream of requests for interviews and information as well as invitations to hold crusades, speak at conventions, etc; the BGEA had to have a very active public relations operation. Until 1957, Gerald Beaven was director of public relations. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, dealing with the press and television was apparently the responsibility of the executive assistant of the Minneapolis office, who was also the office manager for the organization. W. Stanley Mooneyham was special assistant to Graham in the mid 1960s and his responsibilities also for a period of time included handling media relations. The office of the BGEA that sent out press releases, dealt with reporters, handled requests for interviews and oversaw public relations was called the Crusade News Bureau until 1965, when the name was changed to the Crusade Information Service (CIS). In the late 1960s until 1970, Gil Stricklin headed CIS. He was followed by Phyllis Filsco, who held the position until the late 1970s. Don Bailey, who was an assistant to Graham, also had overlapping responsibilities in this whole area of public relations and was Filsco's supervisor. In 1977 he was appointed director of media and public relations. He continued to hold these responsibilities until 1985, when he was replaced by Larry Ross. | |
Scope and Content Description
[NOTE: In the Scope and Content description, the notation "Folder 1-1" or "1-1" means Box 1, Folder 1.]
The material is made up mostly of correspondence, press releases and newspaper and magazine clippings, although there are a wide variety of other types of items such as transcripts of speeches and press conferences, brochures, and photographs. The collection is divided into two series. The first (boxes 1-41) contains files for specific BGEA crusades, almost always Billy Graham crusades. The second series (boxes 42-70) consist of the files of the media office. These are largely correspondence, newspaper clippings and news releases, although there is much miscellaneous material. Much of the correspondence in this collection is to or from W. Stanley Mooneyham, Gil Stricklin, Don Bailey or Phyllis Filsco. Even if it is not specifically mentioned in this scope and content description, there is probably something in this collection about many of the events that Graham and/or the BGEA was involved in between 1964 and 1986. The researcher should check the relevant chronological files to make sure that he or she has found all the relevant information.
Series: Series I: BGEA Crusades.
Series: Series II: Media Office.
Arrangement: The files in this section are arranged chronologically by crusade and then alphabetically by title
Date Range: 1962-1977
Volume: 18.7 cubic feet
Boxes: 1-41, 71-75
Geographic coverage: United States, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England,
Germany, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, Soviet Union,
Type of documents: There are usually for each crusade completed applications for press credentials;
schedules; rough drafts of press releases and other public statements; and correspondence with local
newspapers, magazines, and broadcasting stations. In some cases, there are also minutes, statistics,
transcripts of sermons
Subjects: Billy Graham Evangelistic meetings in the United States and internationally, methods of
evangelism, the use of electronic and print media
Notes: Usually these files deal mostly with the media coverage aspects of a crusade, but in some
cases, particularly for the earlier crusades, there are also files on counseling, arrangements, executive
committees, etc. This is probably because the person who was in charge of the publicity for a
particular crusade was also in charge of other aspects.
Exceptional items: Many files include transcripts or summaries of Graham's messages, including
folders 5-8, 5-24, 9-26, 10-8, 10-13, 11-23 to 11-33, 19-10, 22-13, 26-10, 29-5, 29-12, 30-3, 30-4,
30-22 to 30-33, 32-3, 32-15, 33-4, 34-11 to 34-16, 36-20 to 36-27, 37-12, 36-8, 37-21 to 37-30,
71-19, 72-1 Folder 36-15 includes transcripts of British radio programs about the Spree 73 crusade.
Subseries: This series is broken down into six subseries: topical files about Graham (Boxes 42-45); files on special, non crusade events in which Graham participated (46-50); invitations to
Graham to be interviewed, write articles or appear on radio and television programs (Boxes 50-54); press releases put out by the BGEA (boxes 54-57); correspondence and clippings of the
Crusade Information Service (boxes 57-70), files about Media staff's work on BGEA
international congresses and conferences, and audio and moving image recordings. These
subseries overlap greatly not only in time period, but also in content.
Arrangement: All series are arranged in chronological order by year. The press releases in
boxes 55-57 are all arranged chronologically by the date of the release, except for two general
files in box 44. In all the other subseries, files for each year are arranged alphabetically by folder
title.
Date Range: 1964-1977
Volume: 16.52 cubic feet
Boxes: 42-70, 76-81
Notes: The records in this series are concerned with the Media Office's work of publicizing the
work of the BGEA in general and for Billy Graham's activities in particular. The files are mainly
concerned with the creation of press releases and the handling of invitations from magazines,
newspapers, and radio and televison stations, although there is also a good deal of information
about the press coverage of special events, such as the 1974 International Congress on World
Evangelization and the 1983 International Conference for Itinerant Evangelists.

Notes: The topical files in boxes 42-45 are concerned mainly with quotes from Graham or other
people). These files were probably used as reference materials in preparing sermons, speeches,
press releases, etc. A "quote" in a folder may be a few lines from a newspaper clipping or a
speech several pages long. (Note: Many of the files in boxes 57-70 contain the same type of
material, mixed in with Crusade Information Service correspondence.)
Exceptional items: The following folders contain the transcripts of speeches or sermons by
Graham: 42-4, 42-15, 42-21, 43-4, 43-6, 43-10, 44-6, 48-5, 49-2, 49-5, 49-8, 62-70. Box 45
contains clippings on religious topics arranged according to some kind of numerical system
which is not clear. Most of the clippings are about Graham. Some of these folders contain transcripts of press conferences similar to those in collection 24.
Box 44 contains a few press releases, quotes and other materials relating to films produced by the
BGEA subsidiary, World Wide Pictures. Films for which there are files include Lucia (44-20),

(also known as Amsterdam 83; boxes 80-81)
Notes: This subseries contains files dealing with special events Graham or members of the
BGEA participated in. A folder might contain planning for the event, copies of the program,
press releases, text of a speech given, etc.
Exceptional items: Folder 50-9 contains hundreds of petitions signed by people in Nashville
inviting Graham to hold a crusade in that city. Also of interest is a notebook in folder 46-3.
This apparently was created for reporters and gave Graham's personal history, statistics of his
ministry, excerpts from articles in major magazines, transcripts of press conferences, etc.
Folder 81-6 contains a copy of the 1940 yearbook for Florida Bible Institute, the year Graham
graduated from the school. There are also pamphlets and programs about his years there. These
were perhaps used as reference material by the publicity staff.
Boxes 63-66 contain Don Bailey's files dealing with his participation in the planning and
arrangement for the 1974 International Congress on World Evangelization. Much of the material
in these files deals with such topics as possible participants, program, arrangements, etc. There is
also a great deal about press coverage, including copies of the news releases (65-7, 8, 9, 10).
Folder 80-16 through 81-1 contain press kits, releases, correspondence and other material from
Don Bailey's work including a transcript from the BGEA board meeting about the early planning
of the conference, letters and memos on working with the media to publicize the event, articles of
interviews with Graham and coverage of the meeting.
Folder 81-2 contains copies of 1992 press coverage of the evangelistic meetings in Portland,
Washington and of Graham's visit to parts of Florida devastated by Hurricane Andrew. Folder

Subseries: C. Invitations to Graham to be interviewed, write articles or appear on radio and
television programs

media toward evangelism and Christianity
Notes: Boxes 50-54 contain correspondence and other material relating to invitations Graham
received to be interviewed for magazines, television or radio or to write articles himself. Often
the files also contain copies of the article as it appeared in print. Most of the requests for radio or
television programs are for local shows connected to a particular crusade, but some are for
national programs.

Subseries: E. General Files
Arrangement: In general, alphabetical by folder title.
Date Range:
Volume: 5.6 cubic feet
Boxes: 57-63, 66-70, 77-80, 81
Geographic coverage: Mostly United States.
Type of documents: Press releases, publicity bios, correspondence
Subjects: The BGEA's publicity methods; Billy Graham's life and ministry; the evangelistic
meetings of the BGEA and the international development of the organization; Christian
evangelism and theology of salvation; Richard Nixon's political career; religious, political and
social events in the United States in the 1960s and 70s
Notes: Most of this series consists of the correspondence files of the Crusade Information
Service. They are concerned largely with publicizing BGEA crusades and events Graham was
participating in, preparing rough drafts of press releases, contacts between the BGEA and the
media, and distributing current publicity material to the BGEA staff. For most years there are
numerous files of clippings arranged alphabetically about Graham from the Religious New
Service and the Evangelical Press News Service, and general correspondence. Boxes 77-80
contain biographies and other information about religious, political, sports and entertainment
figures who appeared at BGEA meetings, such as John Stennis, Charles Colson, Andrae Crouch,
Joni Eareckson, Ben Haden, E. V. Hill, Bob Hope, Bobby Richardson and Johnny Cash. Also in
these biographical files are a few on BGEA staff, such as Bill Brown, Blair Carlson, Franklin
Graham, Ruth Bell Graham, Walter Grist,, Myrtle Hall, Don Hustad, and George Beverly Shea.
Folder 77-32 contains several staff biographies in one folder.
The documents in these files often deal with the same events as those covered by the
previous subseries, so there is much overlap and duplication. Thus, any researcher interested
in the 1970 Honor America Day should also check the relevant chronological files in this
subseries.
Exceptional items: Box 60 folder 6 contains some clippings about Richard Nixon. (Folder 62-1
contains transcripts of all the comments that Graham made about Nixon or Watergate at press
conferences. Other materials about Nixon are in folders 19-10, 29-12, 67-18, 68-1). There are
also files dealing with an offer from the magazine Playboy to interview Graham (60-8) and
information on evangelist turned movie actor Marjoe Gortner (60-37). Other topics for which
there are special files include abortion (67-25, 68-8; see also 53-11), the American Revolution
Bicentennial (68-9), Baptists (57-46; see also 42-4, 49-8), Jimmy Carter (69-22), charismatic

be found in folders 7-15.

discussed. Apparently these copies were given to the BGEA by the producers of the programs.
The most significant exceptions or a series of tapes of meetings held in the early 1970s to plan
the 1974 International Congress on World Evangelization. There are also a few items about other
evangelists, which apparently the Media Office staff tapped for reference. There are a few items
that were produced by the BGEA as promotional pieces.
