Recovering Jesus' Teaching on Prayer
Dr. Alan Johnson, professor emeritus
of New Testament and Christian ethics at Wheaton College will examine the
problematic connection of prayer to faith, passion, persistence, and God’s
kingdom. He will lead us toward a recovery of the surprising Biblical-Prophetic praying of Jesus. Dr. Johnson has authored several books including
What Christians Believe and commentaries on 1 Corinthians, Romans, and
Revelation.

A Study of Eagles
The staff of Trees for Tomorrow, an education center
in Eagle River, WI, will present a study of eagles. A favorite site in the
Northwoods, it is likely that a field trip opportunity will be offered.
Evangelicals and Art: Seasons of Trust and Suspicion
Alva Steffler,
professor emeritus of art is the author of several books including Symbols of the
Christian Faith. Dr. Steffler will also teach design, continuing his topic from
last year on “Designs from Nature.”
Ongoing Discussions
Theistic Evolution is a hot topic. Various
participants will be prepared to help us look at some of the key issues
involved. To prepare, adventurers can read, The Language of God by Francis
Collins. Wheaton College faculty members have read this book during the
past academic year.
Another ongoing discussion relates to the quality of our communication
with each other when we have differing opinions—this year most often
focusing on political issues. A suggested book to read is by faculty member,
Dr. Amy Black, titled Beyond Right and Left.
Field Trips, Nature, and Bogs
Dr. Al Smith ’54, professor emeritus of
biology, will lead field trips and short excursions. The Nicolet National Forest
is all around us and full of surprises. Bring your walking stick. This year we
anticipate a trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to view the beautiful
Bond Falls, a part of Wisconsin’s hydroelectric system of power resource and
water retention. |
