B.R.I.D.G.E.
We are excited to announce that Wheaton will be launching an academic and leadership program for Chicagoland high school students next summer.
B.R.I.D.G.E. (Building Roads to Intellectual Diversity and Great Education) is geared towards low-income students or those who would be first in their family to go to college or who are Latino or African-American. The program will give these students an opportunity to take classes from Wheaton professors and receive guidance on applying to colleges—all while living on Wheaton’s campus for four weeks during the summer for two summers.
Highlights of the program include the following:
- The program is free.
- Students who apply and are admitted to Wheaton College are guaranteed a minimum $1,500 scholarship per school year ($6,000 for four years) with the chance to compete for additional scholarship awards.
- Students will have the opportunity to be taught by Wheaton professors, receiving advanced training in reading, writing and critical thinking skills necessary for success in college.
- Students will receive ACT tutoring and guidance through the college application process.
- Students will participate in in-depth Bible studies led by Wheaton students.
- Students will learn how to develop and implement a community service project in their local community or church.
- After the summer program, B.R.I.D.G.E will partner with churches and community organizations to host a series of college preparation workshops, open to all who live in the students’ communities.
Christian high school students from the Chicagoland area who will be rising juniors in 2009 should apply.
More information about the program and application material will be coming in the fall, and the program will run from July 5th-August 1st, 2009. In the meantime, you can contact Coordinator Veronica Ponce at 630-752-5011 or bridge@wheaton.edu.
