Application Requirements for International Students

Thank you for your interest in Wheaton College. We welcome your application and look forward to working with you throughout the application process. Please read the instructions carefully and pay close attention to the deadlines. All the requirements listed must be met in order to be considered for admission.

The application and all supporting documents are due to Wheaton College by application deadline dates. We do not accept faxed applications, reproductions of the application or any application form, or the Common Application. Applications received after the deadline cannot be guaranteed equal consideration. Please allow at least two weeks for postal delivery or use an express mail or courier service. All documents submitted to Wheaton College become the sole property of Wheaton College and cannot be returned to the applicant.

We will acknowledge receipt of your application by email. Please contact us at admissions@wheaton.edu if you do not receive notification within three weeks of submitting your application to us. When all supporting documents have been received, we will notify you by email that your application is complete. Admission decisions are given to overseas students by email or fax upon your written request. We will also send you an official copy of your decision letter by mail. In the interest of confidentiality and fairness to all applicants, we do not give decisions over the telephone or prior to the notification dates listed.

A $300 advance deposit is required from all admitted students by May 1 in order to confirm enrollment for the fall semester. The deposit is non-refundable after May 1. This deposit will be credited toward tuition upon enrollment.  Once again, we welcome your application to Wheaton College. Application Requirements for International Students

Candidates may apply to the College of Arts and Sciences or to the Conservatory of Music, but not both. If you wish to pursue a Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music Education degree at Wheaton College, you should apply to the Conservatory. International Conservatory applicants must submit the International Application as well as the International Student Conservatory Supplement.

  1. Admissions Deadlines – Freshman admission decisions are made at two times during the year. Early Action candidates receive an early, non-binding admission decision by December 31st. Early Action students must apply by November 1st. Regular Action candidates must apply by January 10th and will receive their admission decision by April 1st. Transfer students who wish to enroll for the fall semester must apply by March 1st and will receive an admission decision beginning April 1st. Transfers applying for the spring semester must submit their application by October 1st and will receive an admissions decision by November 15th.

  2. Please read the following definitions below to determine if you are a freshman applicant or a transfer applicant:
    • Freshmen Applicants are those students who have not yet graduated from secondary school, regardless of the number of university credits earned. University coursework is evaluated after acceptance. Freshman applicants are also those who, at the time of application, have graduated from secondary school, but have less than 15 semester hours of university credit. Freshman applicants may not apply for spring or summer sessions.
    • Transfer Applicants are those students who, at the time of application, have graduated from secondary school and have subsequently completed 15 semester hours or more of university credit from an accredited institution, and will have completed a full year of university credit (30 semester hours) before the time of enrollment at Wheaton College.

  3. Application Form - Complete the application form online or download the PDF version.

  4. $50 Application Fee - For the online application, payment by credit card will be accepted. If you send in a paper copy of the application, please include a check or money order payable to Wheaton College. You must send a check or money order from an American bank in U.S. dollars. If you are unable to get your local currency exchanged to dollars or if you are not able to afford the fee, please contact us to request a waiver form. The application fee is non-refundable.

  5. English Proficiency Test Scores - Please refer to the English Proficiency Requirements.

  6. Essays - Please see instructions on page four of the application. Freshmen are required to answer both essay questions one and two. Transfers must submit an additional essay.

  7. Secondary School Record - To be considered official, all secondary school transcripts, mark sheets, and certificates must (1) be sent directly from the school to Wheaton College Admissions Office; (2) bear the original signature of the school official; (3) bear the official school seal. Notarized or certified copies are acceptable.

    If your documents are in a language other than English, an official English translation must be provided in addition to the official documents in the original language. Important: You may not submit a translation of the document which has been done by you or a family member.

    If you have already earned a secondary school certificate, degree, or diploma, please send a certified copy to the Wheaton College Admissions Office. Contact us if you have questions.

  8. Secondary School Information Form (available to download through the online application or the PDF application) - This form must be completed by a school official and submitted with your Secondary School Record.

  9. University Records (if applicable) - Transfer applicants are required to submit transcripts from all post-secondary institutions, whether or not credit was earned or grades were received. Freshman applicants who have taken or are taking university courses at a post-secondary institution should also submit transcripts. 

    To be considered official, all university transcripts, mark sheets, and certificates must (1) be sent directly from the university to the Wheaton College Admissions Office; (2) bear the original signature of the university official; (3) bear the official school seal.  Notarized or certified copies are acceptable.

    If you have earned a certificate or diploma, please send us a certified copy. Contact us if you have questions about which documents you need to send. Important: If you have already earned a bachelors degree, contact us before applying.

  10. Academic Recommendation (available to download through the online application or the PDF application) - A report from one of your academic teachers (science, social science, math, foreign language) is required. This should be someone who knows your classroom performance well. Complete Part I of the Academic Recommendation Form and give it to your reference person. Ask that the form be returned to you in a signed and sealed envelope, which you will submit with your application. Do not open the envelope. Transfers: Your recommendation should come from a university professor or advisor. However, if you are a first year university student, you may submit a recommendation from either a university professor or a secondary school teacher.

  11. Pastor’s Recommendation (available to download through the online application or the PDF application) - A recommendation from your pastor, youth pastor, Bible study leader, or church official is required. This person should be a mature Christian adult who knows you well and has had the opportunity to observe your spiritual life. This person should not be a relative. Complete Part I of the form and give it to your reference person. Ask that the form be returned to you in a signed and sealed envelope, which you will submit with your application. Do not open the envelope.

  12. International Student Certification of Finances - This form must be completed fully and submitted with your application. All required documentation must be attached. Refer to the instructions for full details.

  13. Foreign Student Advisor Report (Only required for students currently in U.S. on non-immigrant F-1 visa; available to download through the online application or the PDF application) - Complete Part A of the FSA report and give Part B to the Foreign Student Advisor at the institution you most recently attended.

  14. Prospective Art Majors Only - Students who plan to pursue a degree in Art are encouraged to submit a portfolio of 10-20 examples of their work on either slides, CD, or DVD. Please label each slide, CD, or DVD image with the title, date, media, and dimensions of the work. For more information, contact us.

Secondary School Requirements

Wheaton College selects for admission those candidates who evidence a vital Christian experience, high academic ability, moral character, personal integrity, social concern, and a desire to pursue a liberal arts education. The College seeks to enroll a well-rounded class of about 586 individuals with a wide variety of attributes, accomplishments, backgrounds, and interests.

Applicants should have followed a challenging college preparatory curriculum. Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses are encouraged if available. Applicants are expected to meet the unit requirements listed below:

  • A minimum of 18 units should be earned in secondary school. (A unit is one full year of a subject.) Only courses taken in grades 9-12 are counted. An applicant should plan to complete at least 14 units by the end of his/her junior year.

  • Of the 18 units, 15 must be earned in the academic areas of English, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign language. Applicants are expected to have completed at least two years of one foreign language.

  • No units are granted for health and activity courses such as physical education, choir, band, driver education, or vocational courses. Only one unit of computer science may be counted toward the 18 units.

  • Students who are in an accelerated program in secondary school and who can complete both the requirements for a diploma and Wheaton’s entrance requirements in three years may be considered for admission. They must demonstrate exceptional academic ability as evidenced in grades and standardized test scores as well as display sufficient maturity to perform at the university level.

  • Courses that meet the unit requirements:
    English (4 units recommended) — Examples: grammar, literature, composition, speech, debate, forensics, writing

    Mathematics (3-4 units recommended) — Examples: algebra, geometry, algebra II, trigonometry, analytic geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, math analysis, functions

    Science (3-4 units recommended) — Examples: biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, physical science, geology, astronomy, anatomy

    Social Studies
    (3-4 units recommended) — Examples: world history, global studies, US history, western world/civilization, African, Asian or European history, geography, psychology, economics, political science, government, sociology, philosophy, state or local history

    Foreign Language (2-3 units of the same language) — Examples: French, German, Spanish, Latin, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Italian

    Other
    — Examples: accounting, art history/survey/appreciation, Bible/religion, child development, communications, computer science, consumer education, drama, ESL, family living, general math, journalism, marketing, music history/theory/appreciation, pre-algebra
