Why Study Mathematics?
At the foundations of the discipline, mathematical researchers puzzle over problems of consistency, the nature of truth, problems of logic, and determining means for ensuring correct derivation of mathematical theorems. Through learning these types of analyses, our students acquire the ability to transfer mathematical methods to myriad applications, offering them expanding life and career opportunities as well-schooled practitioners of mathematics.
Why Study Mathematics at Wheaton?
Located on the main floor of Wheaton's science building, mathematics students and faculty interact with physical and biological scientists, geologists and social scientists as well as other disciplines at the intellectual cross-roads of Wheaton's curriculum to develop cross-disciplinary approaches to problem solving. The purpose of the mathematics curriculum is to present the basic concepts and methods in modern mathematics, to develop the student's ability to think critically using the axiomatic method, and to apply these ideas to other disciplines.
As a student in the program you'll have various opportunities for growth including funded summer research and internships, faculty mentoring relationships, and student employment in the department as a recitation or teaching assistant. We also participate in local, national and international mathematics competitions, and our students sponsor a math club, Arithmos. Arithmos hosts weekly dinners, social events, training for math competitions, guest speakers and more.

Our faculty are experts in their fields of specialization, such as the history and foundation of mathematics, theoretical statistics, math modeling, discrete math, cryptography, fractal geometry and chaos theory, to name a few. In addition to their vast expertise, faculty cultivate relationships with each of their students. “The professors are extremely approachable and willing to work with you to truly learn this subject,” says one student. Excellent Preparation for Graduate School or a Career
Some of our alumni enter graduate schools in mathematics, computer science, or related disciplines. Others undertake careers or advanced training in actuarial science, teaching, economics, business, and statistics. The Mathematics program offers two different majors. Students may choose to complete a mathematics major (leading to a Bachelor of Science degree, unless they request a Bachelor of Arts degree), or an applied mathematics major (leading to a Bachelor of Science degree). These majors provide the mathematical background for students preparing for
- certification in secondary education
- graduate study in a mathematical discipline
- a career in an area using mathematics, such as engineering, economics, statistics, or actuarial science
Students in any major can complete a mathematics minor by taking 20 hours of mathematics courses listed 200-level and above.
