- Human
Needs and Global Resources
The Human Needs and Global Resources (HNGR) Program challenges
students to confront the causes and consequences of poverty, hunger,
and oppression in the Third World from an interdisciplinary perspective
and a biblical framework. This is the context in which students
study the theory, principles, and practices of development, and
in which they formulate a Christian response to the issues facing
the globe and its peoples. The program's curriculum includes interdisciplinary
course work on campus and a six-month off-campus internship in
Africa, Asia, or Latin America with an organization involved in
holistic development.
- Asia
The program is open to all and is part of the interdisciplinary
Asian Studies major. It is an academic study of the dynamic Asian
cultural traditions and of their role in modern world. The overseas
study occurs each May for about four weeks and includes courses
in history, religion, and philosophy with related lectures and
field trips. Each year there is a different study center for this
program rotating among such places as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing,
Seoul, and Penang. The courses focus on the background, thought,
and contemporary cultures of these locations and their surrounding
region. The program provides an in-depth and firsthand introduction
to Asian culture.
- England
Wheaton-in-England is an eight-week summer program offering 8-10
hours of credit in English literature. Although the program varies
somewhat from year to year, depending on the particular interests
of each director, the basic program always includes three elements:
one to two weeks of classes on Wheaton's campus prior to embarking
for England, seven to ten days in London, and three to four weeks
at St. Anne's College, Oxford. The group also goes on numerous
one-day field trips to various literary sites and an extended
northern excursion. Usually the program includes an extended southern
excursion as well, though occasionally the director substitutes
an extended visit to Ireland or Scotland.
- Europe
Wheaton-in-Europe is a summer program sponsored by the Departments
of Politics and International Relations and History offering students
8-12 hours of credit. It provides students with an academic field
experience in the areas of international politics, comparative
politics, and European history and integrates traditional classroom-based
teaching with cross-national experiences in settings such as the
United Kingdom, Germany, and France. The program offers a unique
learning opportunity for students interested in a changing Europe.
- France
Summer study in France is sponsored by the Department of Foreign
Languages. Courses are offered in French language and civilization
for both language majors and non-majors. Language courses are
taught by native French professors at the Institute Français
d'Annecy, and culture/civilization courses are taught by Wheaton
faculty and native French professors at the Centre de Formation
Missionnaire in Albertville (Alps region). The program also includes
stays in Paris and La Vallée de Joux, Switzerland.
- Germany
Summer study in Germany is sponsored by the Department of Foreign
Languages. Courses are offered in German language, literature,
and civilization for both language majors and non-majors. Language
courses are taught by native German professors, and culture/civilization
courses are taught by Wheaton faculty. Academic work is located
at several sites in Germany and is supported by excursions to
cities such as Munich, Vienna, and Berlin.
- Holy
Lands
The Wheaton-in-the-Holy Lands Program is conducted by the Department
of Biblical and Theological Studies
of Wheaton College and the theological faculty of the Graduate
School. Course work and field trips in Egypt, Greece, Italy, Jordan,
Syria, and Israel combine to make the study meaningful in areas
of biblical and archaeological studies. Credit earned at the Jerusalem
University College in Jerusalem is granted by Wheaton College
for work applicable to the Wheaton program.
- The International Study Semester
The International Study Semester is a semester long program run by the Business/ Economics department. Students take a 12-hour package of department coursework that runs the entire semester. Credit is received in international business, International trade, comparative systems, and European political economy. In the A quad an additional four hours can be taken from any college course offerings. Immediately after term break a three-week traveling seminar includes five countries in Europe with approximately 18 site visits, lectures and seminars. An additional charge of approximately $3,500 covers all travel expenses except personal shopping. The program runs on the even numbered years. Participation is selective with applications due in April of the preceding year. - Latin
America
Summer study in Latin America is sponsored by the Department of
Foreign Languages. This program offers courses in Spanish language
and Latin American civilization for both language majors and non-majors.
Language courses are taught by native Spanish-speaking instructors,
civilization courses are team taught by Wheaton faculty and on-site
instructors. Students live with national families and participate
in local churches. Although each program has a large city like
Buenos Aires or Mexico City as its main venue, the program also
includes one week of touring throughout the host country. A one-week
service project with national Christians is also included.
- Music
and Ministry to the Great Cities of Europe
In partnership with local churches and mission agencies, Music
and Ministry in the Great Cities of Europe will afford music students
and faculty the opportunity to share the Gospel while conducting
workshops and performing in cities like Prague, Moscow, and Vienna.
- Russia
Wheaton-in-Russia is a six-week program which begins in Wheaton
for two weeks and then moves to Russia. Native speakers give language
instruction in basic Russian. Wheaton faculty and qualified Russian
scholars lecture in history, religion, politics, and culture.
Students may earn up to eight hours of history credit. The program
meets the history general education requirement. Graduate students
may earn four to six hours of graduate level credit in Church
History. The trip includes visits to museums and historic sites,
concerts, and cultural activities. Living with Russian families
enriches the program. Students interested in Russian culture,
international relations and business, overseas education, and
missions find the trip to be very beneficial. The program normally
is offered in alternating years.
- Spain
Summer study in Salamanca, Spain, is sponsored by the Department
of Foreign Languages. This program offers courses in advanced
Spanish language and civilization for both language majors and
non-majors. Language courses are taught by native Spanish instructors;
civilization courses are taught by Wheaton faculty. Students live
in Spanish homes for one month. The program includes three weeks
of touring; sites visited may include Madrid, Toledo, Granada,
Córdoba, Sevilla, Mérida, Segovia, Avila, El Escorial,
the Sierra de Francia region, San Sebastián/Donostia, and
Santiago de Compostela. Additionally, one week is spent in Barcelona
assisting local evangelical churches and missionaries.
- Kenya
Students may also apply to study at Daystar University in Kenya
through the Christian College Consortium. Approximately twenty
students are selected for each of the fall and spring semesters
for resident study in Nairobi, Kenya. The Registrar's Office has
applications and information.
- Scriptorium
Center, Herefordshire, England
The Scriptorium Center for Christian Antiquities at Grand Haven
and Hampton Court Herefordshire (England) offers academic seminars
for the serious student, with intensive training in areas of textual
and codicological analysis, historiography, and philology. As
an affiliate college, Wheaton College grants graduate or upper
division undergraduate credit for Scriptorium offerings. See the
