Professional and Personal Interests

While preparing for overseas ministry at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, a course entitled "Hebrew Exegesis of the Prophets" 'lit my fire,' and the Old Testament has been my academic passion ever since! In God's providence, my college German major also helped to equip me for a decade of teaching at the Freie Theologische Akademie in Giessen, Germany, where we experienced the dramatic political changes in Eastern Europe firsthand. Four of my former FTA students now serve on the fulltime faculty there.

As the first holder of the Armerding Chair, my stated mission is to foster a love for the Bible and to articulate and defend Wheaton College's traditional confession regarding the inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture. This mission has given direction to my course offerings, academic papers, and publications. Serving as department chair from 2002-2005 gave me a new appreciation for the significant and complex role that the Biblical and Theological Studies Department plays within the college as a whole. I consider it a privilege to teach general education and advanced major courses to both undergraduate and graduate students, in addition to serving as a PhD mentor and second reader.
