Professional and Personal Interests

As a theologian friend of mine likes to say, "The task of the teacher of theology is to make his or her students better readers of Holy Scripture." Theology, therefore, must contribute to the reading and interpretation of Scripture, or it is of no use at all. By helping students wrestle with difficult and complex theological, philosophical, historical, and hermeneutical issues, it is always my goal that they will approach Scripture with open and searching eyes and open and receptive ears. Further, I trust that their hearts will be open to a fresh hearing of the Word of God, as they return again and again to the narrative of God's self-disclosure in the history of Israel, culminating in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

It is indeed my privilege and obligation to assist my students in the ongoing pursuit of thinking and living Christianly in the contemporary world. Hence, the reading and study of theology has vital practical consequences as it makes a modest contribution to the life and witness of the Church.

Theology can never be reduced to intellectual conundrums and ought never be pedantic and dry. Theology must be practiced with joy and wonder, as we reflect with love and gratitude upon the gracious, holy, and living God who reveals himself in the person of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.
