Professional and Personal Interests

"Theological hermeneutics," studying how we engage the Bible, the
church, and the world in developing theological understanding, is my
special interest. Evangelicals are realizing the need to separate the wheat
of our commitment to biblical authority from the chaff of our commitment to a modern
Western concept of reason. Focusing on theology as a pursuit of "wisdom" can address
that - wisdom is a quest that can bridge the gaps between theory and practice,
academy and church, creation and redemption, as well as various cultures and theological
specialties.
I hope for an evangelical community robustly committed to whole-person, curious and careful,
engagement with the truth of God's two "books" -
God's Word and works. Systematic theology facilitates Christian dialogue between the Bible and the liberal arts, so that
we can fulfill the promise of our heritage to engage
both. That vision energizes me to work at Wheaton
- when not watching baseball, or spending time with my wife Amy Black, who teaches
Political Science at the college.
