Professional and Personal Interests
As a "Wheatie" myself, my love for this place runs deep. There are no students I would rather teach than Wheaton students. It is a particular honor for me to be the unworthy heir of my mentor, Mark Noll, as the McManis Professor of Christian Thought. My primary intellectual interests are in the areas of British history, historical theology, Christian thought, and intellectual currents and controversies. My research and writing tends to explore theological and intellectual ideas as they were appropriated and wrestled with in specific cultural, social, and historical contexts. I am the husband of Dr. Jane Larsen, who is British and a medical doctor. We have three children, Lucia, Theo and Amelia, and are members of a young charismatic church, Life Church, in Wheaton.

Grants and Awards
$15,000 CCCU Initiative Program Grant: "Good Book and Holy Land: Historical Perspectives on Anglo-American Christians' Critical Engagement with the Bible in the Middle East". This is a collaborative project, 2007-09. My primary collaborators are Stephen Alter, Thomas Kidd, and Sarah Miglio.

Crisis of Doubt was named The Book of the Year for 2006 by Books and Culture.
