principles of intercultural communication from the fields
of social psychology, cultural anthropology and communication
theory. (2)

573. Qualitative Research for Second Language Educators.
The rationale and methodology of qualitative research
in cross-cultural contexts. Special focus on the application
of qualitative methods to a specific language teaching context
through field research projects. (2 or 4)

611. Theoretical Foundations of TESOL Methodology .
Survey of theory and research relevant to the teaching and
learning of English as a second/foreign language. Emphasis
on practical applications from linguistics, psycholinguistics
and sociolinguistics. (INTR 612,
613, 614, 615, 616, or 617 may be taken with INTR 611 as
a corequisite.) (4)
- BITH 565, 566, or 576:. Students have three options for fulfilling their Biblical and Theological Studies Requirement: BITH 576 History of Christianity to 1900, BITH 565 Christian Theology, or BITH 566 Biblical Interpretation. BITH 564 Principles of Biblical Interpretation is also an option for those with a background in NT Greek. Each class is four credits, and normally two of the courses are offered every semester. There is also the option of taking the BITH course in an intensive format during the summer (see syllabi for the summer versions).

Principles and practices in the development of curricula
for ESL/EFL courses, textbook evaluation, and the mangement
of English language teaching programs. Includes a

615. Teaching Reading and Composition to ESL/EFL Learners.
Theoretical and practical issues involved in teaching
reading and composition, including procedures for planning
and implementing classroom instruction. Prereqisite

of English, including procedures for planning and implementing
pronunciation instruction for ESL/EFL learners. Prerequisite

and practical aspects of ESL/EFL testing, including (a)
survey of test types and (b) procedures for test planning,
construction, administration and interpretation of results.

A seminar focusing on in-depth discussion
of issues related to oral communication and practical demonstration
of methods for teaching speaking and listening.

563. Cross-Cultural Teaching and Learning . Contributions
of non-formal educators, cognitive psychologists, and educational
anthropologists to cross-cultural teaching and learning;
attuning instruction to thinking styles, pedagogical expectations
and cultural values. Prerequisite: 562. (2)

608. Second Language Acquisition . Principles
and skills for the successful learning of foreign languages,
including practical instruction in phonetics and language-learning
strategies. (4)

609/ LING 321. Introduction to Linguistic Science.
Introductory study of the concepts and methodology of modern
linguistics. Survey of the various branches of linguistic
science and of their relationships to other disciplines.

618. Teaching ESL to Children, K-12 . A specialized
course for teachers of English to children in public and
private schools, both in the U.S. and abroad. Emphases include
child language development, literacy, teaching methodology
and issues such as bilingual education and immigration policy.

695 Independent Study. Many students elect to do an
independent study on a topic of interest. Past studies have
included the development of specific English language programs,
research into areas not covered in the curriculum, and the
study of specific cultures and languages.

which involves working closely with an ESL program administrator
and completing an independent project. (2)
