Why SMP?

I think there is a lot to be learned through a global experiential summer of service, and I especially think the aspect of SMP’s emphasis on partnerships is what makes the experience so meaningful and powerful.

Childhood Nickname

I transitioned from Jon Z. to Z to JZ. It was a complicated journey but I’m a better man for it on the other side.

 Words to live by …

Matthew 6:34 - “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

This verse reminds me to be a present minded person.  Each day is a gift from God and we should treat it as such.

 Craziest thing I’ve done

Either scuba-diving with bull sharks or choosing Rob to be on cabinet.  Ask me again at the end of the year.

I want to …… before I die

 Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

 It bothers me when ….

 Auto-correct mangles my sentences.

 People often say I’m …..

A goof?  Not sure exactly. Hopefully positive and encouraging.

Alex Petrie, Travel Coordinator

Why SMP?

SMP is all about partnership with the global church, and I think that this emphasis is a subtle but crucial one. We are called to join together with our brothers and sisters around the world and enter humbly into their lives. The key is not having preconceived notions or superiority when connecting with these other cultures, but having a servant’s attitude, and I think SMP does an excellent job with that.

Words to live by....

I think these 2 quotes by Eleanor Roosevelt go together perfectly:

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams"

“Do one thing every day that scares you.”

Craziest things I've done:
Jump off a 75 foot cliff into Pactola Reservoir in South Dakota!

I want to...before I die:

take a spontaneous flight to some random, exotic place and explore it

It bothers me when:

People are constantly on their phones, especially in group settings (look up!).

People often say im.....

competitive

Christina Rohrer, Travel Coordinator

Why SMP?

I loved being able to participate in SMP and really saw the value in the time that we spent preparing to go out. My trip to Bolivia had a big impact on me and I wanted to be able to play a role in preparing the next group of students to go out and be changed through their encounters with the people of God all across the globe.

 Words to live by …

Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say, rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to all men, the Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything with prayer and supplication, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

 Craziest thing I’ve done

I have made a lot of crazy movies with my family over the years. Some are better than others, but they are all pretty silly.

 I want to …… before I die

I want to see the Aurora Borealis before I die

It bothers me when ….

Emily Bopp, Special Events Coordinator

Why SMP?

I love that SMP pushes its participants to discover God in a new way, in a new context, with new people, and in a new part of the world. God is so much bigger than the United States, and SMP offers us to serve and discover the beauty and complexity of God across the globe. Also I love how SMP prepares it teams to go do ministry.

 Very sassy

Megan Bateman, Fundraising Coordinator

Why SMP?

I love the way SMP enables students to learn and serve at the same time. SMP pushes people outside their comfort zones and teaches students make the most of the whole process. In SMP, we also get to experience not only very different cultures from the one we live in, but also the global church. This, for me, has been an incredible process of learning more about how great and amazing the God we serve is.

Rob Moore, Orientation Coordinator

Why SMP?

SMP is truly a great way to get involved at Wheaton and to reach out to the global church. It makes you learn about Christ through service, travel, and out of comfort zone experiences. It does not get much better then that. I think SMP should be a gen-ed requirement. Just saying.

Ryan Lau, Placement Coordinator

Why SMP?

Student Ministry Partners has broadened my understanding of the Church and my vocation. During my medical ministry to Bolivia, I had only experienced the global church during short-term missions trips to various countries. Through my six-weeks in Cochabamba, where I attended Bolivian churches, read the Bible in Spanish with patients, and prayed with multiple hospital staff members, I experienced the beauty of the global church in its entirety. Also, my trip allowed me to challenge my desire to pursue medicine through witnessing challenges in the emergency room and volunteering in mobile health clinics.
