Possible Programs for the Summer of 2015:
Work with Mile High Ministries >> whose mission is to “provide an opportunity for college students to consider challenges from the 'margins of society' and give space to reflect upon God’s direction for their lives”. Students will live, learn, and serve in community partnering with various organizations in the city from Joshua Station >>, a transitional housing facility which helps families make the transformation from homelessness to a healthy, stable living environment; to Dry Bones >>, "a place where followers of Christ connect with those living on the streets and all of our faith grows as we discover new life and good news together." This is done "in the context of relationships, serving and loving in the way of Jesus, we meet the spiritual and physical needs of homeless youth and young adults. We seek to equip, inspire, and deploy believers to relieve suffering, facilitate reconciliation, and free the heart to love."
Los Angeles, California
Work with Intervarsity through LA Urban Project >>. "LAUP is a 6-week urban experience intensive where students are oriented to the city and to the main teaching themes for the summer (God's heart for the poor, racial reconciliation, prayer and spiritual warfare). We will continue learning about these themes through Scripture studies, training sessions, and reading discussions - all as we serve at a range of urban ministries and non-profit organizations.LAUP is a rigorous program for students who are eager to work hard, pray hard, and be transformed by the Spirit of God.Activities vary depending upon the site. Some include tutoring children and youth, assisting homeless families and single mothers, working with women in recovery from abuse, advocacy, and distributing food.In the past, we have served at sites such as Harambee, the Walter Hoving Home, the Bresee Youth Institute, Church of the Redeemer in south central LA, the Lincoln Heights Tutorial Program, and People Assisting the Homeless. Specific site placements are decided once applications are processed and teams are formed.
Work with Intervarsity through Chicago Urban Project >> living in an urban community in the Chicagoland area living out the incarnational Gospel. "For over 20 years, the Chicago Urban Program has been connecting college students with communities in Chicago to experience and learn about God's heart for social reconciliation and justice. Partnering with local churches, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship provides students with an urban service opportunity while providing biblical and spiritual teaching and training." "Do Justice. Love Mercy. Walk Humbly. This is our calling. This is our passion. This is our joy."
"We are InnerCHANGE >>, a Christian order among the poor. We are communities of missionaries living in marginalized neighborhoods around the world – places most people want to avoid or ignore. We seek to live out the good news of Jesus among the poor, both with words and deeds.
We neither glamorize our calling nor diminish its importance. We are moved by the life and love of Jesus, enticed by his goodness. We have sensed his call to take up our crosses and follow: knowing that as we lose our life for his sake, we will truly find it. Despite the enormity of the missionary task, we do not pursue this work with long faces. Rather, we rejoice in our opportunity to be messengers of the King as he invites all people - poor and rich alike - to his banquet table."
This summer we will be partnering with InnerCHANGE in East London. We will be doing a variety of things in the community from working with refugees to running summer camps and small groups.
