BreakAway 2013 Trips

If, after reading this page, you are interested in signing up for any of the trips you see listed here, please refer to our sign-up page for more information.

Each trip requires a non-refundable deposit. The deposit will be applied to your total trip cost. Deposits can be paid with either cash or check. Checks should be made out to Wheaton College/ BreakAway with the name of your trip in the memo line. Sign-ups begin on November 26, 2012 for some trips and January 29, 2013 for others. To see when each trip signs up, look for information below. Sign-ups are on a continuing basis until the trips are filled. After the sign up day, you can sign up in the Office of Christian Outreach, in Lower Beamer.

 

International Trips

Requirements for international trips:

*Your passport or a copy of your passport is required at sign up!

All participants must meet with the Student Health Services nurse by January 18, 2013. There is a $25 fee for this visit, which is not included in the cost of the trip. Any recommended immunizations from this visit are also not included in the cost of the trip. All participants must also be 18 years of age by March 9, 2013.

 

Guatemala

Participants will spend a week at a Christian orphanage in Guatemala City, doing manual labor on the grounds as well as interacting with the children at the orphanage. Participants will have the opportunity to experience Guatemalan culture in the beautiful city of Antigua.

Cost of trip: $975; $100 non-refundable deposit due at sign up.

Guatemala Long Trip Description>>

Panama

The team will serve at a Christian facility by providing programming for retreat participants as well as serve youth in nearby communities. Must have leadership experience in Christian camping. See Craig/HoneyRock office x5124 prior to sign up (Spanish-speaking preferred).

Panama Long Trip Description>>

Toronto, Canada

Serve in two unique environments showing love to mentally disabled adults through music, dance, art, and acting classes with St. Jude's Academy of Arts. With St. Francis Table, serve meals to the homeless and provide an opportunity for community, advocacy, and friendship with St. Francis Table.

Domestic Trips

Huntsville, Alabama

Work in an impoverished neighborhood by partnering with Lincoln Village Ministry near Huntsville, Alabama. Serve through renovating homes, tutoring at local schools, helping with ministry projects, and worshipping with residents as you challenge yourself to learn what it means to powerfully show Christ’s love to your neighbor.

Huntsville Long Trip Description>>

Americus, Georgia

Spend a week living in an intentional Christian community where there is a rhythm to each day filled with prayer, work, study, service & fellowship. Experience how Koinonia Farm today is feeding people physically & spiritually. Work will entail varied farm work from planting to harvesting vegetables, to off-season pecan orchard clean-up and work in a bakery – chocolate anyone?

Americus Long Trip Description>>

Angola, Louisiana

Spend a week in a maximum security prison. Prepare to have all of your preconceptions of prison life challenged as you spend a week in the Louisiana State Penitentiary.

Angola Long Trip Description>>

Denver, Colorado

Learn about God and different angles of homelessness while serving the urban poor in downtown Denver. Students will be serving with Joshua Station, Christ Body Ministry, and Dry Bones.

Denver Long Trip Description>>

Deering, New Hampshire

Prepare to witness the transformative power of God’s love at His Mansion Ministries, a Christ-centered recovery community for individuals who struggle with addictions, past trauma, mental health, and eating disorders. Students will live, eat, work, and have opportunities to form personal relationships with staff and residents.

New Hampshire Long Trip Description>>

San Francisco, California

Experience a plethora of service opportunities in San Francisco as you minister to patients at Laguna Honda Hospital, serve the homeless population with Youth With a Mission, and partner with InnerCHANGE, a Christian order among the poor.

San Francisco Long Trip Description>>

Savannah, Georgia

Team members will spend the week serving the less fortunate citizens of Savannah by working in a food bank, tutoring and serving dinner to children, and working with Habitat for Humanity. Participants will enjoy serving through construction, fundraising, shelving, and relational ministries throughout the week.

Savannah Long Trip Description>>

Appalachia, Tennessee

Spend two days working with families in rural Appalachia on home repair projects including painting, yard work, and minor construction and two days renovating and building in-camp facilities at MountainTOP. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to go caving!

Tennessee Long Trip Description>>

Wichita, Kansas

Serve God while gaining first-hand medical experience. The team will serve at low-income clinics, shadow doctors at a Level 1 Hospital, help to construct mobile medical clinics and prepare medical equipment for overseas missions. See Dr. Walters/AHS x5744 in AHS prior to sign-up.
