Happy Hour
Faculty and students gather on alternating Thursday afternoons at 3:06pm in the Ivan J. Fahs seminar room for root beer and popcorn. This bimonthly gathering gives the students and
faculty opportunities to interact informally and build relationships. Each Spring the department hosts a special Happy Hour for our outgoing
HNGR interns, during which the interns tell about their internship plans. Periodically throughout the year, Happy Hour hosts special Sociology and Anthropology guests, giving students a chance to interact informally with symposium speakers and other guests.
Senior
Brunch
On
the Saturday morning before commencement, the departmental
faculty provides a brunch for the graduating seniors and
their families. This event is an opportunity to celebrate
the graduation of the students and meet their parents and
family.
Year-End
Picnic
Each spring the department sponsors a year-end picnic for
department majors to celebrate the conclusion of the year.
Advising
Event
At least once a year, the department sponsors an 'advising
event' where the faculty in the department introduce themselves,
the courses in the department are presented, and critical
information about scheduling and new courses is provided.
Watch for the next advising event on the department
calendar.
Newsletter
A newsletter edited by a student is published bimonthly
with articles, news and information for students.
Movie
Night
At least once a semester, the department sponsors a 'movie
night' to involve students informally with faculty and other
students and to build community and apply sociological and
anthropological concepts to popular culture. In these sessions,
a popular video ('Whale Rider' in the spring of 2004) is
shown, and then a member of the faculty leads a discussion
about it. Refreshments and informal conversation provide
an opportunity for students to interact with faculty and
other students.
Ivan
Fahs Memorial Chapel
On October 3, 2003, the department sponsored a conference
on Christianity and social justice. Warden Burl Cain, Warden
of Angola prison in Louisiana, will speak in chapel at 10:35
am and in an afternoon session at 3:30 pm on the role of
the Christian in criminal justice. Angola Prison is probably
best known as the prison upon which the film 'Dead Man Walking'
was based and has been the subject of several other film
and print documentaries.
Departmental
Chapels
Once
every semester, the sociology-anthropology department has
its own chapel service for its majors. This format gives
the departmental faculty and majors an opportunity to worship
together and an opportunity for the students to plan their
own chapel service. Speakers are usually students who have
had some unique experience (summer, HNGR internship, or
other internship) that has enriched their faith.
Dedication
of the Ivan J. Fahs Memorial Seminar Room
Ivan
J. Fahs served the Sociology Department at Wheaton College
faithfully for many years as a professor. He was a gentle
man who wanted Sociology to serve the least of these. He
was a friend of the homeless, he was a freind of the powerless,
and he acted as a servant leader in everything that he did.
Ivan loved life to the fullest. He took time for conversations
with people, and he made Sociology meaningful to eveyone
he met. He loved the Lord with all his heart, and he loved
people just as much. Behind a tenacious commitment to excellence
was a man of great compassion. He went to be with his Lord
in January, 2002, so we are taking this opportunity to celebrate
the ministry of this great man. The dedication will take
place from 9 - 10 am on September 27.
