Overview

The Philosophy Department explores the heritage of ideas which shape modern life and thought; it relates a Christian world view to basic questions about human beings and their place in the world, about knowledge and values, and about art and culture. This in turn develops clear and logical thinking, it discovers reasons for believing, and it unites the many pieces of an education into a systematic whole.

The faculty are committed to exploring the contribution of philosophy to Christian thought and of Christian perspectives to philosophy.

Students are encouraged to develop breadth of interest. In addition to the regular major, an alternative tailor-made program is available, permitting the substitution of a coordinated 16 semester hour package in another field for 8 hours in philosophy. An honors program is also available, and an annual conference attracts both students and professors of philosophy from across the country.

As a result of their preparation, Wheaton philosophy majors move in various directions; some pursue graduate study so as to teach philosophy or other disciplines in secular universities or Christian colleges, some are pre-seminarians heading toward ministry, missions or theology teaching, others are pre-law and are accepted at some of the top law schools in America. Still others go into computer science, business, educational administration, medicine, journalism and every variety of calling. A well-developed mind, an informed understanding and the capacity for clear and cogent expression are essential equipment for effective service.
