Conference Overview

Questions of what is means to be in the "post" condition are as poignant today as ever. If we are past "modernity" (a claim that itself is certainly open to question) then what is the status of reason, ethics, and religion? On the one hand, some thinkers emphasize "ghettoization," in which there can only be communities with their respective practices and internal goods. Others, in response to ghettoization, have pushed for a new kind of universalism or liberalism that keeps and reworks certain features of modernity.

Are these the only options in the state of post-modernity? Is there a way to traverse postmodern difference and postsecular universality? What is the future of philosophy, theology, and contemporary politics? And what does the current "return to religion" signal for the thought of our age?

The conveners of this conference will address these questions by bringing together a variety of voices.
