March 2012

From the President

Ryken

This month at Wheaton we are exploring new ways to “love our neighbor” with the help of a unique campus-wide art display, “LOVETOWN, PA.”   In 2010 New York artist Gene Schmidt brought his community art project to Philadelphia consisting of blocks made from wood scraps, each containing a letter cut out like a stencil, spelling out the full text of 1 Corinthians 13.  These 1,267 blocks of wood were laid down, side by side, through neighborhoods spanning six miles across the city.  The event was captured by photographer Alicia Hansen, and interacted with the city’s people and environment during the time I was preaching on this passage at Tenth Presbyterian Church.

Both Gene Schmidt and Alicia Hansen joined us on campus earlier this month to install the entire “love” chapter in various locations across campus: the foyer at Edman Chapel, Buswell Library, in Adams Hall, in the Sports and Rec Center, at the Wheaton Science Center, at the Beamer Center, and the Billy Graham Center.  Leading up to the event at Wheaton, students engaged with diverse segments of the local Wheaton community in shared art workshops.  “LOVETOWN, PA” is the featured art display at the Billy Graham Center Museum through May 31, so if you are on campus to see your student, I encourage you to experience this unusual exhibit.

In Christ’s service,

Philip G. Ryken

President

More about the Lovetown Exhibit

Artist Gene Schmidt oversaw the selection of portions of the 1 Corinthians 13 chapter that  fit best—and would be mostLovetown fitting—in each of six campus locations.  He chose the major descending stairwell wall at Anderson Commons in the Beamer Center for this portion of scripture, reminiscent of God’s command to write His words on the doorposts of our houses and gates (Deuteronomy 11:18-21).   This wall is seen by nearly every Wheaton undergraduate several times a week.

To learn more about the Lovetown exhibit and about President Ryken's Book Loving the Way Jesus Loves, visit this webpage of the Billy Graham Center Museum.

Wheaton in Network (WiN)

You may have received an email inviting you, as a parent, to join Wheaton in Network (WiN). WiN is a new WiN Logoonline tool that gives students the opportunity to search for and connect with advisors and mentors from the Wheaton family.

On Wednesday, March 21, Alumni Relations invited students to join WiN. Participating in WiN is one of the best ways for students to connect with the alumni community, to broaden their network, and to get practical advice as they identify their calling. Over 500 students signed up in one day! Feel free to encourage your son or daughter to sign up as soon as possible.

For more information on ways you or your student can participate, visit win.wheaton.edu or contact win@wheaton.edu.

Financial Aid

April 15th is the deadline to have all requirements (FAFSA, application, and any other requested Soderquist Plazadocuments) completed if you desire full consideration for need-based Wheaton grant funds. If your student is selected for verification, and you choose to provide tax information by submitting a tax transcript, please allow extra time to request and receive the transcript from the IRS.

New this year are changes in the way tax information is collected in the application process. We encourage families to file their taxes electronically, wait several weeks for the IRS to process their returns, and then complete the FAFSA. We recommend that families then choose on the FAFSA to have their IRS tax data retrieved electronically from the IRS. Details regarding what is called the IRS Data Retrieval Option and information about changes in the verification process are available on our Financial Aid website.

Please encourage your student to frequently check their myWheaton account for any outstanding items needed to process their financial aid award. If you or your student have any questions, please contact our office at 800-362-2674, or e-mail us at finaid@wheaton.edu.

Students Say "Thanks"

On Thursday, February 9th, a day that arrives two-thirds of the way through the academic year, more than Tuition Freedom Day800 Wheaton students stopped by the Tuition Freedom Day kiosk in the Beamer Center to express their gratitude to Wheaton donors.  Tuition Freedom Day helps communicate to students that about one-third of the cost of their education is funded by the generosity of others.  Below are a few of the thank-you notes students authored to express gratitude to Wheaton alumni, parents, and friends.  We hope you enjoy reading these notes and feel appreciated.  We know the students who wrote them did so with a grateful heart.

Thank you for your generous giving to Wheaton College. I have definitely benefited from a Wheaton education, both in the classroom and through Wheaton's community. It is your generosity that has enabled me to receive the most out of my Wheaton experience. Thank you again! You are very much appreciated.   --Nathaniel ‘13

Thank you so much for giving to Wheaton. There is no way I could afford to be here if it were not for the generosity of Wheaton’s donors. It is such a blessing to study at Wheaton; it's not a gift I want to take for granted. I look forward to blessing others like you have blessed me. Thank you again!   --Keri ‘13

Thank you so much your contributions to Wheaton College, both in prayer as well as with your finances.  As a graduating senior, I consider myself tremendously blessed to have had the experiences that I have at Wheaton.  In particular, this past fall I had a 6-month internship in Delhi, India through the Human Needs and Global Resources (HNGR) program.  Thank you so much for making experiences like this one possible.   --Scott ‘12

Thank you so much for your support! As a senior reflecting on my time at Wheaton, I can see how much your generosity has impacted me—whether through your support of the great faculty members I've learned from, the learning opportunities and ministries I've been involved with, or all the unique experiences in between! Thank you for impacting my life.   --Hayley ‘12
