HISTORY
Youth Hostel Ministry began in 1970, when a student, after completing
his assignment for the Student Missionary Project, traveled through
Europe via the youth hostel (inexpensive lodgings for youth) circuit.
As he traveled, he became aware of the need to share his relationship
with the Lord with fellow travelers. Along with this need, he
saw the unique situation which the hostels provided, on being
very conducive to communicating the Gospel.
The
following summer, Lee Howard and three other Wheaton students
returned to Europe to travel from hostel to hostel and talked
with travelers. Convinced of the validity of the project, they
began to formulate plans for several team efforts the following
year. In 1972, fourteen students went to Europe with the purpose
of sharing the Good News with other travelers, and "Youth Hostel
Ministry" was begun.
PURPOSE
In direct response to Scripture, Youth Hostel Ministry is dedicated
to fulfilling the Great Commission with the burden to share the
Gospel of Christ and the joy that is found only in Him. Although
evangelism is the primary purpose, YHM has the following secondary
goals: demonstration of the Christian faith in lifestyle and an
attitude of service, encouragement of and fellowship with team
members and other Christians, and growth in one's personal relationship
with the Lord.
The
question may arise, "Why Europe?" Although historically
a continent with a strong Christian heritage, Europe is today
notorious for centers of drugs and sex and an overall attitude
of permissiveness. Amsterdam, Paris, London, and Rome are all
cities invaded by travelers searching for the meaning of life
and the offereings of the world. By sharing the Gospel, YHM seeks
to direct those in need towards Christ, the ultimate answer.
