Wheaton College and North Central College will jointly host the 66th annual meeting of the American Scientific Affiliation (ASA). The theme of the meeting is “Science-Faith Synergy: Glorifying God and Serving Humanity.”
The ASA meeting will take place from July 29 through August 1 on the campus of North Central College in Naperville, Illinois.
Plenary sessions are as follows:
Dr. Steven Bouma-Prediger, Professor of Religion and Chair of the religion department at Hope College, will lecture on the topic “One Example of Science-Faith Synergy: How We Can Glorify God and Serve Humanity by Caring for the Earth.”
Dr. Dorothy Chappell, Dean of Natural and Social Sciences at Wheaton, will discuss “Challenges, Changes and Chalices in the Natural Sciences.”
Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist and Professor of Geosciences at Texas Tech University, will address “Climate Change: Why Are Science and Faith in Conflict?”
Dr. William Hurlbut, Consulting Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological sciences at Stanford University Medical Center, will discuss “Stem Cells, Embryos and Ethics: A Continuing Controversy.”
Dr. Gareth Jones, Professor of Anatomy and Structural Biology and Director of the Bioethics Centre at the University of Otago, will lecture on “Glorifying God in a Scientific Millieu: The Contrasting Domains of Neuroscience and Reproduction.”
Dr. Mary Schweitzer, Professor of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at North Carolina State University and Curator of Vertebrate Paeleontology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, will address “Dinosaurs Under the Microscope: A New Look at Old Dinosaurs.”
“Wheaton College has had a long association with the American Scientific Affiliation, and many of its earliest activities, starting in the 1940s, involved a number of Wheaton College faculty,” says Associate Professor of Biology Raymond Lewis, local arrangements chair for the meeting. “We are pleased to co-host this meeting of evangelical Christians in science.”
Additional Wheaton scholars participating in the meeting include theology professors Dr. Kevin Vanhoozer and Dr. Jennifer Powell McNutt; Dr. Stephen Moshier, Professor of Geology; physics professor Dr. Heather Whitney; psychology professor Dr. William Struthers; Professor of Physics and Philosophy Dr. Robert Bishop; Dr. John Walton, Professor of Old Testament; and Professor Emeritus of Physics Dr. Joseph Spradley. Several Wheaton College students will present their research as well.
The conference will include trips to Matthiessen State Park, Morton Arboretum, Fermilab, Yerkes Observatory, and three sites of interest at Wheaton College, including Wheaton’s state-of-the-art Science Center, opened and dedicated in 2010.
