This week’s photo was sent by Cathy Nolte, the office manager for the Office of Christian Outreach (OCO). Each year, Wheaton’s Christian Service Council (CSC) hosts an Angel Tree Outreach to provide toys for children whose parents are in prison. Cathy Nolte and OCO assistant director Sue Lee start preparations for Angel Tree in October and work steadily until mid-December when CSC students, Wheaton faculty and staff, and members of the Rock of our Salvation Church in Chicago purchase and deliver presents to children of prisoners in the Austin Community of Chicago. Because of these efforts, over 30 families and 100 children are able to experience the joy of Christmas gift giving.
For 30 years, volunteers with Angel Tree, a program of Prison Fellowship ministries, have delivered Christmas presents to six million prisoners’ children in the United States. By participating in the Angel Tree program, the Christian Service Council provides a practical way for Wheaton students to share the love of God with their neighbors in the Chicagoland area.

Wheaton College audio engineer, Brian Porick submitted this week’s image. “As our New Year’s resolution for 2012, Kerry Haps [fellow audio engineer] and I decided to eat through the printed menu of the Smokehouse Restaurant in Wheaton—in order, in a year. On Thursday, December 6, we completed our accomplishment. We had lots of friends, colleagues and loved ones join us to celebrate our achievement.”
Brian and Kerry were joined not only by their families and Wheaton College faculty and staff, but also a local Chicago Tribune reporter who came to document the event.

This week’s photo came all the way from Thailand. Scott Johnson ’88, poses at the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai Province. Scott, a business administration major while at Wheaton, now serves as the Executive Director for Youth For Christ International/Asia Pacific (YFC). “We mobilize and provide resources and training to the national programs across Asia and the Pacific that currently have a YFC ministry. We also work with local leaders who wish to pioneer YFC ministries in nations where they are not yet present. We currently have around 4,000 indigenous staff and volunteers working in 28 nations throughout Asia and the Pacific.”
The Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai is a sanctuary and rescue center for abused, crippled, or distressed elephants.

Bob Mead, the husband of Connie, a staff person at the Buswell library, took this picture of the new display at the Marion E. Wade Center, which is based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, charting the journey of Bilbo Baggins in his adventures to the Lonely Mountain and back again. Wade Center archivist Laura Schmidt says, “We wanted to celebrate both the 75th anniversary of The Hobbit (published in 1937), as well as the December 14 release of the new film based on the book.”
The display was created by Wade Center employee Shawn Mrakovich. The Meads’ daughter Leota made the mixed media sculpture of Smaug the Dragon. The display is available for viewing Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Several people sent images of a recent alumnus who added a new distinction to the list of accomplishments of Wheaton alumni. On November 2, Paul Nelson ’11 appeared on the “Jeopardy!” television game show and became the new champion. A political science major who graduated summa cum laude from Wheaton, he was almost unstoppable on history and political categories. Uncertain about the Final Jeopardy category (College Football Team Nicknames), he wagered nothing and wrote "thanks Mom and Dad," thereby preserving his earnings.
Paul, a legislative correspondent in Senator Chuck Grassley’s Washington office, says of his appearances, “The experience was a fantastic and humbling one. I’ve always loved watching Jeopardy! and being able to appear on the show was unforgettable. The whole game is a tribute to the liberal arts, which makes a Wheaton degree excellent Jeopardy! prep.” Paul ended his run on the show as a five-time champion!

In 1946, a small brass bell mounted on a trophy became the symbol of victory in a football rivalry between Wheaton College and North Central College of Naperville. The trophy has resided with the North Central Cardinals since 2008. On Saturday, November 3, the Wheaton Thunder football team defeated seventh-ranked North Central, 35-21, and regained the Little Brass Bell traveling trophy.
The photo of the team celebrating their win was taken by Michael Hudson ’89.

Students who study Spanish at Wheaton are required to complete eight to ten hours of academic study in a Spanish-speaking country of their choice. The picture this week comes from Irma Castañeda ’13, a senior studying sociology and Spanish. She is spending her fall semester in Nicaragua with the study abroad program called SIT [School for International Training] Nicaragua: Revolution, Transformation, and Civil Society.
Irma shares the story behind the photo, “This picture was taken in a rural farming community in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. My group and I did a rural homestay for a week to experience living on less than $2 a day like many rural campesino families in Nicaragua. I got to milk a cow and ride a horse for the first time! My favorite experience, however, was when my host aunt accompanied me to wash and bathe at the nearby river. Under the shade of the trees and with our feet submerged in the water, we got to talk for hours, sharing our life-stories. I also loved this experience because it helped me understand my mom better. She grew up in a rural farming community in Mexico, and would also go wash and bathe at the river! Now I know what it's like!”

Wheaton College students attend chapel services each week. Twice a year there is a special service called a “town hall chapel.” After opening prayer, students are encouraged to step up to microphones in Edman Chapel and ask questions of Wheaton President Dr. Philip Ryken ’88.
At the last town hall chapel of the 2011-2012 school year, a new question was put to Dr. Ryken. Jens Jorgenson ’12 and Attali Clauson ’12 asked him to perform their wedding ceremony in the summer! After some schedule checking, Dr. Ryken was willing to accommodate the couple’s request.
The wedding brought together many generations of Wheaton graduates, posing in this picture, along with Dr. Ryken. Jens writes, “What a perfect way to close out our four years at Wheaton, celebrating our marriage with all of our friends and family—and also getting married by Dr. Ryken!”

During Wheaton’s 2012 Homecoming Weekend, approximately 350 people participated in a 5K run on Saturday morning, October 6. The event was held in honor of former student Ramie Harris ’13, who was killed in a small-plane crash on November 26, 2011, on her return from Indiana to Wheaton after Thanksgiving. Her father, Ray; sister, Shey; and a friend, Chris Backus, also died in the crash.
Ramie’s favorite color, purple, was chosen for the balloons that were launched in her memory, and participants wore purple ribbons and t-shirts. Ramie’s friend, Joy Fabry ’12, spoke at the event, saying, Ramie “took hold of the promises of Christ and lived in the hope of His calling.”

On Monday, September 17, the Wheaton College Gospel Choir competed in “How Sweet the Sound,” a competition for gospel choirs sponsored by Verizon Wireless, before a full house at the United Center in Chicago.
The video captures the Choir’s rendition of “Let Everything That Hath Breath” as well as the commentary given afterward by gospel greats Fred Hammond, Erica Campbell, Bishop Hezekiah Walker, and CeCe Winans for Choir director Tanya Egler.
Wheaton's choir was the first non-church-affiliated gospel choir to advance to regional competition in the five-year history of “How Sweet the Sound,” which is one of the largest choir competitions in the nation.

“Welcome to the ‘Love’ Boat! Every year upwards of 30 Wheaton faculty choose the privilege of spending almost a week at HoneyRock just before the new school year begins, to help run the Passage program for incoming freshmen,” wrote Mark Thorne from the foreign languages department. “It is one of the few times amid the rush of the academic year when we faculty get the chance to unwind and just enjoy being with each other—all the while teaching and interacting with freshmen, and being surrounded by the beauty of HoneyRock and Long Lake.
“One annual tradition, seen in this picture, is the evening when we pile into the two Voyageur canoes and race each other to the house of HoneyRock Director Rob Ribbe ’87 for a night of mouthwatering BBQ and faculty fun. This year I was placed in the front of one of the canoes and caught this fabulous picture of my fellow faculty in mid-stream! Our experience at HoneyRock is one of the highlights of our year.”
Pictured in the canoe (clockwise from bottom center) are Ben Lovaasen, chemistry (aka "Dr. Love"); Sarah Hall, psychology; Chris Vlachos Ph.D. ’06, Bible and theology; Peter Walhout ’91, chemistry; Jim Wilhoit, Bible and theology; Lars Jacobson ’87, ROTC; Johann Buis, Conservatory; Bob Brabanec ’60, mathematics (starting his 49th year of teaching at Wheaton, but this was his first time at HoneyRock!); Heather Whitney, physics; and John Vessey ’86, psychology.

This week’s image highlights an art exhibit titled, “Walking with the Creator,” on display in the Billy Graham Center Museum through September 9. “The exhibit showcases the artwork of three female Korean-American artists,” wrote Museum Coordinator Eric Durban, who sent in the photo. “Pictured here is artist Sun H. Choi installing her never-to-be-repeated ‘Journey of Love’ from the remains of traditional Korean herbal medicine. The artist meticulously constructed her work, pin by pin, across a 33-foot gallery wall, overflowing onto adjacent walls, baseboards, and ceilings. It is her depiction of the Holy Spirit as healer, and the process of installation was just as formative for her spiritually as she hopes the experience will be for the viewer. This is just one work of art among a varied selection of quarterly exhibits on display in the Sacred Arts Gallery. And though the featured artists reflect on their own journeys within a specific Korean-American culture, like all inspiring artists showcased at the BGC Museum, they testify to the needs, emotions, and longings common to all people on a journey of faith.”
Visit the Billy Graham Center Museum website to view slideshows of Choi’s installation process and the complete exhibit.

This week’s image is perhaps our first from Papua New Guinea, where Josh Williams ’08 went on a short term medical missions trip as a fourth year medical student with the University of Chicago. Josh explained, “I spent most of the 7 weeks of the trip at a rural hospital, but for one week, I went deep in the bush to the village you see in the photo to work with a community health worker and experience village life.” In the photo Josh is taking a break from medicine to play basketball with men of the Odede tribe in Hesalibi, a remote village deep in the jungle of western Papua New Guinea.

This summer, our inbox was inundated with photos sharing a common theme: Wheaton alumni and students meeting up around the world. Perhaps there really is something to the oft-expressed notion that Wheaton is a place where lifelong friendships are formed, and where you become part of a family.
“This picture was taken at Shadow Lake in Arapahoe National Forest near Granby, CO” wrote Heather Johnson ’10. “We all flew to Colorado to visit a friend (Christine Will ’10) who was leaving for Chiang Mai, Thailand to teach at Grace International School. After we saw her, we all camped at Arapahoe. We had a wonderful time and we hope to continue meeting up yearly for camping and hiking… Finally, we are all SO THANKFUL that we went to Wheaton!”

“I am leaving this month for a 2-year commitment to teach at Grace International School in Chiang Mai, Thailand,” wrote Christine Will ’10. “The school supports the families of Christian workers in Southeast Asia, representing over 90 mission organizations.
“I have partnered with Wycliffe Bible Translators’ Global Service Program (GSP), which emphasizes sending out support missionaries (particularly in roles of education) to further Bible translation and to support Christian workers worldwide. While at the SIL campus in Dallas last week for pre-field training with CHED (Wycliffe's Children’s Education Department), I was ecstatic to find out that two of my instructors were Wheaton grads!! Bob Pittman ’65 (Mathematics) has had many roles within Wycliffe but now works for the Wycliffe office in Orlando, and Marti Ahlquist ’74 (Christian Education) is an educational consultant for Wycliffe USA.
“Both individuals have such solid walks of faith and were so encouraging to those of us who are heading out to serve TCKs (third culture kids). The Lord used my time at Wheaton to plant and cultivate a desire for overseas teaching/ministry, so it was very special to discover this commonality with my inspiring Wycliffe trainers!”

Not only are we both math majors, but we also both have run on the cross country and track teams at Wheaton. Shortly after I was accepted to a summer research position in Flagstaff, Arizona, I heard from Gary (who just graduated in May) that he had landed a job with US Airways in Phoenix. We knew we’d have to meet up sometime over the summer, and the other weekend we finally did. This is a picture of us enjoying a day trip to Sedona, Arizona on Sunday, July 9. This week’s image is a mystery photo. To explain: the Web communications team learned recently that our “Send a Photo” form had stopped working properly, and as a result, several photos did not make their way to us. Eventually the problem came to light, and our team retrieved the files. But there were casualties. In the case of this week’s image, the picture was saved, but its accompanying note didn’t survive. So we had an interesting photo on our hands, but no inkling as to who sent it or what it’s about.
Faced with this predicament we thought, “Why not ask for assistance from the amazing Wheaton community?” You all already supply us with a steady stream of great photos—why not a little investigative help as well? So, if you have any information as to who the people are in this picture (perhaps you’re one of them?), or what the photo is about, please feel free to visit Wheaton’s Facebook page and comment on the photo there >>

Professor Malone noted that First Lieutenant Hovde, “far from home serving in Afghanistan came across something somewhat familiar” when he saw the man wearing a Wheaton Hockey sweatshirt. “Nobody’s quite sure where he obtained the shirt. Hovde, a Minnesota native, hasn’t been able to locate any hockey training facilities quite yet.”

Psychology Professor Raymond Phinney sent this week’s picture, which was taken at the Association for Psychological Science Conference May 23-27 in Chicago. There, undergraduates Jacob Gordon ’13, Susie Lee ’13, and Isaac Miller ’12 (pictured from left to right) were co-authors with Professor Phinney “concerning visual attention using a visual illusion called illusory line-motion.” Isaac Miller presented the poster.
At our request, Professor Phinney explained further: “Illusory line motion is the perception that a line grew to its full length when it really appeared all at once. The illusion occurs when the line's appearance is preceded by an attentional cue. It is thought that one's attention to the cue enhances visual processing of one end of the line more than the other end. Thus one becomes consciously aware of one end before the other, resulting in a percept of line growth rather than sudden onset. Seeing how the illusion varies with cue distance from the line helps us measure the spatial extent of the attentionally enhanced processing, yielding a measure of the spatial grain of visual attention.”

The “Image of the Week” has never featured a news video from an outside source (pardon the ad at the opening), but this one was too good to pass up.
Steven Moore ’12 and his wife, Kelly Skledar ’11, were riding home on the train last week when Steven recognized a reporter for CNBC, Rick Santelli, sitting nearby. When the reporter got up to leave, Steven went up and introduced himself, and told Mr. Santelli how he appreciated his views. Mr. Santelli gave Steven his card and invited him to come down and have a tour of the Chicago trading floor. Steven and his wife are moving to Houston soon, so he decided to take advantage of the opportunity and went down bright and early the next morning. The congressman whom Mr. Santelli was scheduled to interview that morning had to cancel, so in a last-minute scramble the producer and Mr. Santelli chose to interview Steven. As the video attests, Steven rose to the occasion. Way to go, Wheaton grad!
Kelly Skledar ’11, wife of Steven Moore ’12, and Sarah Moore ’14, Steven’s sister, sent in the link to the video.

Susan Dunn-Hensley, an adjunct professor in the English department, took this week’s photo, President Ryken sent it in, and English professor Tiffany Kriner told the story behind the bunny, as follows:
Dr. Ryken (sr) is famous for his classroom “Technology.” He brings in a motion sensor frog that croaks if you cross the threshold of the classroom late; he brings in singing fish, dancing elmo, all manner of kitschy, funny touches. (Once, when I brought in a cymbal for a gong in my classes, he expressed near-covetousness). SO, to celebrate his retirement, I decided to get hold of the biggest technological statement I could.
I drive by, on my way to work, this house on President that puts up giant inflatables for various seasons (santa, a snowman and a snowglobe for Christmas, the bunny for Easter, etc.). It’s sort of their thing. It had flashed upon my brain that THOSE inflatables would be PERFECT technology on a grand scale—if only one could get hold of them!
So, swallowing my considerable fear, I knocked on the door of this house of complete strangers. I explained my colleague and my great desire to show him beloved at his retirement party. I asked whether they might consider loaning the bunny to me for the evening of the party, despite the fact that I am a complete stranger to them. I gave him my business card (Wheaton!), and asked him to call me.
Excitingly enough, he DID call me the next night, after consulting with his wife. His name is Matt, and he loaned said bunny, to the great effect you see in the photo. I put the sign on the bunny to transform it from an Easter Bunny to an Energizer Bunny (to refer to the scores of books that Ryken has given the church and society). Everyone loved it. “A triumph, Tiffany,” Dr. Ryken said. :)
When I returned the bunny with some flowers and a thank-you note, I expressed the wonder and gratefulness that I felt at his family’s willingness to loan such an expensive thing to a complete stranger. No big deal, though. “You’re from Wheaton!” he said. Hooray for town-gown relationships and the gracious gifts of our College’s neighbors!

"Longtime Wheaton baseball and basketball coach Lee Pfund '49 stands in front of Lee Pfund Stadium, the newly-enhanced home of Wheaton College baseball, in between games of the facility's debut in a doubleheader against North Park on April 7," said Sports Information Director Brett Marhanka of this week's photo, taken by Michael Hudson '89.
"The renovated facility in Carol Stream is the first permanent home for the Thunder since 2008, when the team played at the same field (then known as Legion Field). The recently completed phase of the facility includes a brand new artificial turf surface, lights, dugouts, and fencing. Fundraising is currently underway to continue the remaining upgrades which includes stadium seating, press box, restrooms, concession stand, and locker rooms."

"In the fall of 2008, I was happily accepted into Workout, the faculty-led student ensemble responsible for building the shows performed in Wheaton College's Arena Theater," wrote Bethany Clark '12. "Membership is permanent, and I spent the next four years working to create theater alongside our amazing community of faculty and students. Now, in just a few weeks, I will be concluding my story in Arena Theater with the role of 'Olivia' in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Ending with Shakespeare as a senior is a perfect conclusion, since my first experience in Arena Theater was A Midsummer Night's Dream, and I can hardly believe that my journey is almost over.
"The cast of the show (captured here in the middle of rehearsal) is a talented and tight-knit group, and has attacked Shakespeare's difficult text with joy and gusto. Workout grad Maggie Ritchie '07 even returned to the show to write original music for the text of Shakespeare's songs, and this photo was taken by our stage manager (Meghan Gegner '14), looking down upon the cast as we learned the famous final song of the play."

“Introducing All the President's Men, IM Basketball B-League Champions 2011 and Runner-Up 2012,” wrote Sam Hayes '12. “Jared Cochrum assembled this team shortly after President Ryken left his pastoring position and came to Wheaton College for better basketball. Ryken shoots jumpers with a smoothness reminiscent of butter and a pureness much like his theology. He leads our team with fervor and gets calls like Michael Jordan. There's no one we'd rather have at the helm. It's been a fun couple of seasons, and though it's sad that us seniors must retire from Wheaton IMs, it's good to know that Ryken will keep holding down the fort.”

2012 April 6 Image of the Week
Winter and spring meet in this striking image, taken by HoneyRock staff member Luis Cadena, of Long Lake at Wheaton’s Northwoods campus. We offer it here for the week spanning the great contrast that is Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday. The ice is melting, and “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” (1 Cor. 15:54b)
Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her. (John 20:11-18)

"It was a banner day for religious freedom yesterday…" So said the Wall Street Journal of January 11, the day the Supreme Court handed down a unanimous decision in Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Three Wheaton alumni who serve as attorneys at the Becket Fund—Luke Goodrich '01, Eric Kniffin '98, and Diana Verm '04—all played a role in the Supreme Court victory, which the Journal affirmed was "arguably among the most important religious liberty cases in a half century."
Pictured here, in a photo provided by Emily Hardman of the Becket Fund and submitted by staff member LaTonya Taylor, is the Becket Fund team with local counsel and church representatives in front of the Supreme Court Building on the day of the oral arguments last October.

Each year students celebrate Tuition Freedom Day in February, which marks the first day of their school year that tuition is covered by the generous donations of Wheaton alumni, parents, and friends. Laptops were available in the Beamer Center from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. for students to write thank you letters to donors who gave to the Wheaton Fund.
"Thank you for allowing me to study abroad," Caleb said to donors, "for allowing me to develop friendships, to grow in Christ, to enjoy myself, and to discover who I am." Other students thanked donors for opportunities to study in a Christ-centered community, to participate in Wheaton Athletics, and to study under the "amazing professors" at Wheaton.

What happens at Wheaton while the students are away for break? One event held on campus during the first week of 2012 was the annual retreat of the Ethnic America Network, a “coalition of ministries encouraging local churches to share Christ's love with the growing ethnic diversity in our communities.”
The Billy Graham Center and its Ethnic Ministries team hosted the gathering of 30 individuals, including pastors, faculty members, and ministry and lay leaders from around the U.S. and Canada.
According to Chandler Im, Director of Ethnic Ministries, the main goals of the Network are 1) to reach out to ethnic people groups with the message and love of Jesus Christ, and 2) to promote reconciliation, unity, and collaboration among the diverse people groups in the North American body of Christ.
The retreat's 3-day array of activities included preparing for the upcoming annual Ethnic Ministries Summit in South Carolina, for which more than 600 attendees are expected.
