Sending you wishes for a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year is this week’s image of the stately Alumni Christmas Tree, which graces the third—and fourth—floors of Blanchard Hall. The 18-foot tree is bedecked with nearly 300 ornaments from alumni who live and serve in more than 60 countries.
“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’” —Luke 2:8-12 (NIV)

Each night of finals week at 9 pm, students emerge from their places of study around campus to partake in the scrumptious “exam treats” provided by Bon Appétit. Wednesday night’s ice cream sundae bar drew quite the crowd in the lower level of the Beamer Center. “The lines were ridiculous,” said Brian Delamarter ’12, who sent in the photo taken by Kyle Godden ’12. “People got in line 10 minutes early. The lines on Tuesday night, for root beer and pretzels, wrapped up and down the long halls of Beamer. It’s the best party Wheaton has.”

At the Todd Beamer Memorial Wall, Wheaton students left their prayers, thoughts, letters, and thanks for junior Ramie Harris, who was killed in a small plane crash on November 26. “Thank you for the time you were here and the lives you touched,” one student wrote.
The wall is now covered in verses and memories of Ramie’s time and influence on campus. The notes are mixed with thankfulness for her friendship, sadness over how greatly she will be missed, and hope for what is eternal. One letter reads, “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal [2 Corinthians 4:18].” Below the wall sits a box of letters for Ramie’s mother and brother.

“What was your major? What was your first job? How did you identify your career path?” were among the questions posed by Ita Fischer, Wheaton’s Director of Career Services, to a November 17 Leadership Council panel. Students in attendance contemplated the panel members’ candid responses—and asked a few questions of their own, such as, “How do you assess character and integrity in an interview?”
The Leadership Council is a group of senior executive alumni and friends who are committed to serving as a resource for equipping students to “cross the chasm” from academics to the workplace. The panel members pictured are, from left to right, Hasana Sisco '86, Director of Global Safety, Health, Environment & Compliance for Nalco; George Kohl '76, Managing Director with CB Ellis; David Wu '86, Executive Director of Pui Tak Center; Kristin Colber-Baker '86, Director of Corporate Finance for Wrigley, and Steve Wilhite '85, President and CEO of Summit Energy.

This picture is made up entirely of Wheaton Improv alumni, ranging from 2008-2010. This week’s picture was taken several years ago in a place far away, but it holds an unexpected connection to Wheaton’s upcoming “Words of Delight” conference. Dr. Wayne Martindale, a longtime faculty member in Wheaton’s English department who spent two years teaching in Beijing, provided the photo and the story.
“When Professor Huang picked us up at the Beijing airport at the beginning of our two years of teaching under his leadership as Chair of the English Department, we did not know that our new boss was the translator of Lee Ryken's Words of Delight into Chinese,” wrote Dr. Martindale.
“That moment gave us another thrilling insight into God's providence. Huang Zongying is now Dean of General Education at College of Arts and Sciences, Beijing Union University. This coming week, Professor Huang's new textbook, A Literary Introduction to the Bible, is being published by Higher Education Press, the leading publisher of educational books in China. The book is in English and is intended for Chinese English majors in courses on the Bible as literature.
“It was a joy to see the reach of my colleague Lee Ryken's work into the very university where we would be teaching for two years (2006-2008).”
Pictured here, from left to right, are Professor Huang, Dr. Martindale and his wife, Nita, and Professor Jiang. The shrubs shaped into the initials “UIBE” stand for the English name of the Beijing university: University of International Business and Economics.
Noting yet another Wheaton connection, Dr. Martindale added, “While Jiang was on sabbatical at Baylor as a guest of Wheaton graduate and Professor of English David Lyle Jeffrey '65, Huang and I were both teaching a graduate course in English for him at UIBE. Our connection with Professor Jiang, then Chair of the English Department, was made by David Jeffrey, who has remarkable connections in China... The reach of Wheaton College around the world is remarkable.”

“This photograph was taken last year during Tyndale Theological Seminary’s twice-yearly board meeting,” wrote Marie Brice ’09. “We were surprised to see how strongly Wheaton College was represented in this small, international seminary right outside of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The years of graduates stretch from ’43 to ’09, with different majors and different programs, all coming together during this meeting. The board members present included a career missionary classmate of Billy Graham, Dr. Sam Faircloth ’43; missions pastor Dr. Tom Keppeler M.A. ’84; and a career missionary with Greater Europe Mission, Dr. Jerry Ericson ’67. The long-term staff included Tyndale’s President, Dr. Jeff Seume ’77; Jonathan Packard ’96; Laura Thomas ’07; and Marie Brice ’09.
“All came to Holland for the first time to serve in the Amsterdam Shelter hostels through Youth Hostel Ministry. Each of our experiences with YHM was so strong that we all felt the call to come back and serve in Holland. A year has passed, and many are going their different ways, but we all are grateful for our time in Holland as well as for Wheaton, which brought many of us here the first time. It will be exciting to see the relationship that continues to grow between Tyndale and Wheaton, and it serves as a good reminder of how small the world really is.”

This was my sixth year as a Passage prof; I return each fall not only for the incoming students, but for time with these people. Most of my closest friends on campus have come through my connection to HoneyRock. It was another great year. They quickly found out that not only are they both from North Carolina, but they live ten minutes away from each other and had never met. Katie and I quickly became best friends because we both transferred into the Conservatory.
“When my roommate, Katie Meeks '12, and I decided to live with Katie and Susanna next year, we all thought it would be a wonderful bonding experience if we could all spend time together in N.C. during the break, and we actually followed through with it and enjoyed spending time at the beach, meeting their families, and experiencing southern hospitality! They met up with Henry Cooley, whom I saw through the fence and feverishly called until he figured out we were at the concert… ‘Under the fifth hanging speaker stage left!!’ I kept telling him. Bethany Jacobs, Megan Turnquist, and I drove in from work and met Dan Fager, who took the train after work, and Nancy Swider-Pelz, Jr., who had finished her second Olympic training workout of the day and took the "L" to us. "Kyri and I had the privilege of interning at His Mansion (hismansion.com) for the summer,” wrote Dave McHale ’12, who is pictured here with Kyri Gerogiorgis '12."His Mansion is a ‘Christ-centered healing community.' It focuses on ministering to individuals who struggle with various types of addictions and disorders, more often than not stemming from significant hurts and pains that are present in their lives. We were able to walk alongside these men and women as they journeyed through the healing process at His Mansion,” said Dave.
"His Mansion believes that all healing comes from the only one who has the power to heal, the Great Physician, Jesus Christ... The Gospel is central to their ministry. It was a joy to see the Holy Spirit working in the lives of these men and women, revealing to them just how much the Lord loves them in the midst of their pain. It was a delight to see men and women come to faith in Jesus. Kara Beth Vance '09, Stephanie Solari '09, and Lucy Solórzano '09 participated in Glen Ellyn's annual 4th of July weekend event, the "Lake Ellyn Cardboard Regatta."
"Hundreds of teams are challenged to build boats out of only corrugated cardboard, duct tape, and glue, and not only float, but finish the race," explained Lucy. "Although we didn't win in our category, we made it to the finish line—in third place!"
Stephanie and an additional teammate, Meagan Shannon, built the 11-foot long vessel using the cardboard provided by the race, "and had to buy plenty of hot pink and zebra-printed duct tape to wrap our boat enough to keep it from sinking," noted Lucy.
Tyler Keith '09 also helped the crew, loaning his truck for transporting the somewhat biodegradable yacht to the regatta. "He was a trooper," said Stephanie.
"On the day of the race there were weather warnings, so the race was moved 15 minutes ahead of schedule," said Lucy. "Unfortunately, Steph had timed leaving work perfectly for the original start time and missed the race. We still made third place thanks to Kara Beth's coaching on how to row. She was part of the Crew team while at Wheaton and passed along what she learned."
Added Kara Beth with a smile, "Rowing for Wheaton Crew really prepared me for life after college. Next year, with a little coaching, we're going to win that cardboard boat regatta!"

"Here we are in front of the St. Louis arch after the marathon, Rachel Mends '10 and Megan (Cook) Tillotson '10," wrote Megan Tillotson, who sent this week's image back in April.
"We met as Freshman at HoneyRock before college even started. We stayed friends through college, often running and rock climbing together in the SRC. We always wanted to run a marathon together, and this past weekend we ran the Go! St. Louis Marathon with 3,000 other runners," noted Megan.
"At temperatures of 87 degrees it was brutal race, but we finished. All the runners towards the back of the marathon were detoured and had to run the half marathon because of the heat. We were able to finish the full marathon and we didn't walk at all! Rachel was such an incredible support and encouragement for me, I thank God for her friendship and for the time we had together at Wheaton."
Megan concluded her note by quoting Corinthians 9:24-27 (New Living Translation): "Don't you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified."

Brad added, "This year the team was comprised of four seniors, seven sophomores, and four freshmen (one who was not able to make the photo). The season began as most seasons do, with a slow start, but through excessive perspiration and strong leadership, the team was able to successfully put together a competitive squad.
"Pictured here you see the team in Pfund practice gym sporting their donated Boombah uniforms. The team finished the season strong with a second place finish on their home court at King Arena, losing to a very capable Chicago area alumni team in a 12-team tournament. As if it wasn't crazy enough that three people from a town of 26,000 all went to the same smaller Christian college, we each independently became Christian Education and Ministry majors.
"It's safe to say that we all knew of each other in high school, but we became closer friends during our time at Wheaton. As we look forward to graduation this weekend, it was great to get together one last time as undergrads to reminisce, to see what the future holds for each of us, and to thank God for the surprise blessing of an extra four years together."

"During our year as RAs, we developed rich friendships that continued to deepen during our last year of college. It has been a blessing to live alongside this group of people, supporting one another as we enter our next stages of life and celebrating the lasting memories we have created together.

Alumnus Michael Hudson's photo of the Wheaton College Gospel Choir, rehearsing for their April 16 concert under the direction of Mrs. Tanya Egler, is our offering for the week spanning Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday.
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."
So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

"We here at His Mansion Ministries were recently very blessed by the team of 14 Wheaton students that came to serve as volunteers here during their spring break," wrote Jennifer Stanger, a staff member with the New Hampshire ministry (http://www.hismansion.com), who sent this week's picture of Wheaton team members.
"It was an amazing group of students who enthusiastically entered into our daily life and routine within our community here in Deering," added Jennifer. "I was excited to see that as they served and worked alongside our residents and staff, they helped us tremendously, and they too were ministered to through their week here."
"God is constantly at work here, restoring broken lives and bringing each of us to a place of healing and wholeness. It was exciting to share in this with the group from Wheaton."

"When the earthquake shook Japan on Friday, March 11, I was in Tokyo, but my immediate thoughts were of the community I grew up in and where my children grew up near Sendai," said Philip Foxwell '80 in an excerpt sent in by his daughter, Alanna Foxwell Barajas '06, who provided this week's images.
Philip and his wife, Anda Margesson Foxwell '81, live in Tokyo, where they raised their four children, Alanna '06, Tyler '08, Jordan, and Marisa '13. Philip and Anda are both actively involved in the relief work of CRASH Japan (http://www.crashjapan.com/), which is currently mobilizing churches, mission groups, and Christian relief organizations in Japan.
"When I arrived there on Monday to try to find our loved ones, there had been no relief workers or news crews who had made it out to that peninsula yet," said Philip. "The roads were impassable, so I walked the rest of the way into the village… As I looked down at the flattened, utterly destroyed village, I saw a young couple picking through the rubble below. Realizing that this was the daughter of our very close friend, Hidemasa Endo, I ran to her, and she told me her father was safe."
Philip is pictured above with Hidemasa Endo and his wife after constructing a temporary shelter with them. Their house, noted Alanna, "wasn't just knocked over—they can't even find a shred of it."
"During these hours," said Philip, "I just had to hike over to our neighboring fishing villages of Hanabuchi and Shobudahama, on either side of us, where I had spent so much time growing up, and my kids as well…The places where many houses had been were simply smooth, without even a single toothpick left on them, and other places looked like a giant mass of shredded wheat: a jumble of houses, boats, buildings, and human belongings, and cars jammed in every conceivable position—upside down, on top of each other, inside houses, and on top of walls.
"In a huge pile of debris, I pulled out a broken wooden board (zelkova wood—my favorite!), and painted on it in Japanese kanji was 'Shu wa waga no…' and the next part of a kanji looked like 'michi.' 'The Lord is my way.' Japan just doesn't have signs like that, let alone the one in a million chance of finding the broken piece in the piles and piles of devastation. I am convinced it is a message from the Lord, and the message is obviously clear. I believe that though this is a devastating moment in the history of Japan, and I would never for a moment downplay the tragedy for so many, and the loss for so many more, that this can be a time of renewal and in many ways, new life. Japanese are very resourceful, resilient people in any circumstance, and I believe the world will see an example of courage and determination in the months ahead, and with it amazing Grace."

As for the story behind the candy bars, Kate explained, "Their freshman year, the guys made a pact that the first guy to get married would give the other guys each 40 large chocolate bars. The second guy to get married would give each of the other guys 30 large chocolate bars, and so on. This was the celebration of chocolate and marriage and friendship and God's faithfulness."

"Boy, have I got a good one for you!" wrote Professor Mark Thorne, who sent this week's image at the end of January.
"[On January 28], a 'Faculty Battle of the Bands' took place in Coray Gym as part of a fundraiser for Haiti relief, specifically the Spring Breakaway student trip there," said Dr. Thorne.
"The picture represents a rare shot of some of our top-notch Wheaton faculty giving their all in a venue quite different from their regular classroom stage! In this photo we see the grand closing act of the evening, the irrepressibly-named 'Funkagelicals' who delighted the near-capacity crowd of students with their talent and yes, bravery. The students were so impressed with the impeccable funk grooves, some spontaneous student crowd-surfing even broke out. The moral here? Looks like you can count on our Wheaton College faculty to bring *all* their talents to serve others and have a great time while they're at it!"

Professor John Walford sent this week's images, which show "five works of New York artist, Makoto Fujimura, here seen hanging in Edman Chapel for Special Services, January 19-22, 2011."
The artist himself is pictured at the podium in the upper image; Makoto Fujimura spoke briefly at Chapel on January 19.
Noted Dr. Walford, "These paintings are the centerpiece of Fujimura's major commission from Crossway Books, Wheaton, to illuminate their fabulously produced The Four Holy Gospels, recently released, to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible, 1611. Fujimura undertook the task of illuminating this publication alone, which is unprecedented in more than five hundred years."

Shutting down Wheaton's campus is close to impossible, and thus it took Chicago's third largest snowstorm on record, which blew into town February 1, to do just that. For students, the result was a snow day—and reason to get out and play, as shown in photos sent in by Susan Wilcox '11 and Joshua Blaney '10.
"I took the following pictures during my walk around campus on Wednesday morning following the blizzard the night before," wrote Susan, who sent three images and accompanying notes.
In this photo:"Wandering around campus, I was amazed by the way the wind continued to pick up the snow and throw it around in the air. [The image] captures the early morning light amidst the snowflakes caught up in the swirling wind."

This week's images came courtesy of Danielle Seaman '11, a performance major in violin and co-concertmaster of Wheaton's symphony orchestra, pictured here with violinist Charlie Siem after a master class.
During the week leading up to his January 22 Artist Series performance, the British virtuoso spent time on campus in a variety of activities not typically expected of one of the greatest emerging talents in the classical world of violin, including speaking with all of the Conservatory students, playing in the symphony orchestra's violin section during rehearsal, eating lunch with students in the cafeteria, offering a short performance at Chapel—and participating in the master class.
About the class Danielle noted, "I performed the first movement from the Dvorak violin concerto for Charlie. It was very inspirational and challenging to perform and learn from a virtuoso so close to my age. Three other students performed that afternoon. We also had a chance to ask Charlie any questions and to see his exquisite violin up close. He was fun to talk to, and everyone enjoyed taking part in this amazing experience."

"For the past two years, the Archives & Special Collections has been uploading information into an archival database (Archon) that allows users to access descriptive information and digitized material housed in its varied collections that are stored on over one linear mile of shelving," wrote David Malone, head of the Wheaton College Archives & Special Collections, who sent this week's images.
"One of the most recent 'uploads' of data is the descriptive information of nearly 1,000 letters from the Charles Albert Blanchard papers," noted David. "Ranging in date from 1858 to 1937, the correspondence tells the story of Blanchard's life, including his marriages, loss of children, and relationship with his father, and it also includes correspondence between Blanchard and President William Howard Taft.
"Among its data, Archon also contains descriptive information for thousands of Wheaton College audio recordings, a digital collection of the artwork of Allen Lewis, as well as descriptive information for the papers of Oswald Chambers. Find some treasures for yourself at http://archon.wheaton.edu/."
