"We call it family dinner and it happens every Tuesday night," wrote Stephanie Solari '09 in her note accompanying this week's image. "A group of our friends, mostly Wheaton alums, meet at 7:15 and cook something different each week."
Added Stephanie, "We've made some great memories from our time spent in the kitchen as well as around the table. We're sort of a 'hybrid' group—many of us didn't know each other very well during our time at Wheaton but since graduating have become good friends...We have a great time talking, hanging out, and playing games after dinner; it's so fun!
"This past week, after dinner, we had a gingerbread house-making competition. We were split into teams and judged with criteria we came up with on the spot. The top two houses are shown here, and one of them is Blanchard!"

Christmas decorations at Wheaton can be intentional, as shown in this week's images.
"Yesterday, Perry Mastodon's Christmas hat was placed on his head," wrote Geology Department staff member Jamie Selander, who sent in the upper photo of Wheaton's venerable Mammut americanum. "Perry looks especially charming in his new home in the Science Center." The photo was taken by Stephen Moshier, Professor of Geology.
And from the Facilities Management department, staff member Cindy Daffara sent the lower image with the note, "'O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, how lovely is your faucet'—or at least that's how it's done in the Facilities Management front office. Look closely at what we use to decorate our tree. It has been a tradition of decorating at Christmastime with 'All Things Physical Plant.' Our Christmas Tree is just one example of our 'creativity.'"

Upon learning that Professor Bryan McGraw held a class session in the Wheaton Chick-fil-A parking lot as he and his children awaited the store's November 11 grand opening, we had to suggest that he send in a picture. Dr. McGraw complied.
"The class is PSCI 346, Ancient and Medieval Political Thought," noted Dr. McGraw. "We were discussing at that point Maimonides' Guide for the Perplexed."
The McGraws moved to Wheaton from Georgia, "where Chick-Fil-A is rather ubiquitous and my kids especially like to eat there. So when we heard that a CFA was opening in Wheaton, we thought it would be fun to camp out and get one of the 'First 100' prizes."
He added, "The class seemed pretty favorable to coming out (since I couldn't leave the parking lot for the 24 hours prior to the opening or I would lose my spot) and we had a quite nice discussion, though we were distracted by some game folks started playing in the parking lot and a car accident at the intersection of West Loop Road and Butterfield."

"Please find attached here a photo that has made me happy this term," wrote English Professor Brett Foster, who sent the image of "a fine group of Wheaton Shakespeareans with Anise and me before a recent performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater."
"We had just read the play in our English course, and so enjoyed the chance to compare our reading experience with the viewing of a professional production," noted Dr. Foster. "Other colleagues in the English department also like to connect texts from our classes with relevant shows or exhibits in Chicago. My dear theater colleagues also do this regularly."

Each year, as part of Wheaton's Human Needs and Global Resources (HNGR) program, faculty members trek to locations around the globe in order to advise students.
One such faculty member is associate professor of biology Kristen Page, whose recent advisory visit with Andrew Kinzer '11 near Lake Natron, Tanzania afforded quite the opportunity for faculty-student collaboration.
"On my recent visit with HNGR intern, Andrew Kinzer '11, we spent some quality time (close to 5 hours) digging our vehicle out of the sand using camping bowls," says Dr. Page, who sent the photo. "Thankfully we had the bowls as there wasn't a shovel in the vehicle, and we hadn't seen another vehicle on this particular road for days."

Sado Park '10 and Andres Villatoro '11 sent virtually the same image, of "some of the staff that worked at the B.R.I.D.G.E. program this past summer." All of the staff members are Wheaton students or graduates.
"Building Roads to Intellectual Diversity and Great Education (B.R.I.D.G.E.) is an intensive, four-week residential academic enrichment and leadership program that brings together first-generation college-bound, low-income or African-American or Latino students from the Chicago area who are interested in preparing for admission to college," wrote Sado. "There were 33 high school students who attended from Chicago and surrounding suburbs. There were 13 current Wheaton students who worked as staff for the program as RA's (Resident Assistants) or TA's (Teaching Assistants). I worked as the RD (Residence Director)."
Sado added, "This picture was taken during the second week of the program as students and staff became more comfortable and open with each other. It was also when things got more challenging and demanding for all of us. This program has impacted me to understand that even if I cannot change the world, if I can change the world of an individual, that is a sufficient reason for me to keep loving my neighbors."
Andres noted, "[B.R.I.D.G.E.] was an incredible opportunity to serve the Chicago community as we saw students' lives being completely changed....The staff was incredibly blessed by the students as we became part of a tight community working for the same goal. It was an experience we will never forget."

"We had been planning this women's basketball reunion since February," wrote Claire Glass '08, who sent a photo from the June weekend spent in Sawyer, Michigan with her former teammates.
"Over the weekend, we spent time catching up on each others lives, but in reality, there had been no change in how close we were, and the fellowship and fun we used to have while at Wheaton still ran strong," said Claire.
"All of these women would say that we were more than just teammates playing basketball. We became family, and shared many highs and lows together.
"Even though we spread out over the nation after graduating, there has always been someone who's been available to talk to or willing to pray for you. I know it's true for many of us that our experience at Wheaton and on the women's basketball team wouldn't have been the same without these sisters in Christ."

The community has been such a blessing and encouragement to me—there is always someone there to laugh or cry with. It has not always been perfect, but God has used our fragility to give us a more complete picture of what a Christ-like community is supposed to look like.
"Five of us are not going to be here next semester (HNGR, Wheaton in Chicago, and studying abroad), but we know that when we return to campus, we will be welcomed back by a loving and gracious community. These people have characterized my Wheaton experience; I will miss them so much next semester, but I trust that God will continue to prove Himself faithful through our friendships."

"Them Dry Bones," a work of art in the Timothy Botts exhibit currently on display at the Billy Graham Center Museum, provides our image for the week spanning Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday.
The exhibit, "Bound for Glory: New Work by Timothy Botts," is a collection of more than 30 works of art inspired by African-American spirituals.
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'" Then they remembered his words.

Wheaton's Human Needs and Global Resources (HNGR) program presents its 5th Annual Symposium, "Strengthening What Remains," February 26-27. The two-day event sponsored by John Deere is free and open to the public.
Founded in 1976, the HNGR program equips students to holistically confront challenges faced by peoples and nations of the Global South. More than 600 Wheaton students have completed HNGR internships in 65 countries.
One such HNGR intern is Zach Lynkiewicz '10. This week's image was taken during Zach's six-month internship in Sierra Leone which wrapped up in December.
"During my HNGR internship in Freetown, Sierra Leone, I attended St. George's Anglican Church, where I met the Rev. Canon Emerson Thomas M.A. '89 (Theological Studies)," describes Zach.
"I was working with Faith Alliance Against Slavery and Trafficking (FAAST) in their fight to end all the forms of human trafficking in Sierra Leone," he adds. "This is a picture I took earlier today during a driving tour of Chicago public housing projects," says Curtis Witek '12, who is currently participating in the Wheaton in Chicago program.
"This is one of the few remaining buildings of the Cabrini Green Project. The Wheaton in Chicago program has a strong focus on gentrification and affordable housing, and one way we learn about the history of these issues is by taking a driving tour to CHA (Chicago Housing Authority) sites. Other stops along this tour were the former location of Robert Taylor Homes, where Park Boulevard, a mixed-income development, has been built at the north end, the Dearborn Homes, the Jazz on the Boulevard development, and others."

Tim '86 and Marilyn Westergren '86 of Tres Cantos, Spain sent a family photo for the Alumni Snapshot, an online map of Wheaton alumni photos and greetings on the Sesquicentennial website.
Tim and Marilyn noted, "Our city recently added a granite sculpture at the highway entrance. Our girls have grown up in this town and love it. So we took a picture celebrating our family's bond with Tres Cantos, Spain!"
Visit 150.wheaton.edu/alumni to explore the global snapshot, which will remain open for submissions until Homecoming 2010 (October 1-2, 2010).

Students, faculty, staff, and community members gathered at Armerding Lecture Hall on January 28 to hear the story of Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), the first privately-funded university ever allowed in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Wheaton's Science Division hosted the event with the university's founder and president, Dr. James Chin-Kyung Kim, an American businessman and Wheaton parent.
PUST's 247-acre, 15-building campus, designed by the same architects who designed the Seoul international airport, was built by members of the North Korean military. Construction began in 2001, and the school was dedicated in September 2009.
Additional phases of construction on university buildings and on the "Pyongyang Techno Park" are scheduled to complete in 2012.
During his talk Dr. Kim told stories about his remarkable journey toward founding PUST, a journey which included more than 40 days of imprisonment in North Korea in 1998.
Vice-president David Kim, a former Bechtel executive who moved from San Francisco to Pyongyang to work at the university, gave presentations on academic programs and faculty opportunities.

Last month, Graduate Admissions Counselor Jonathan Barger visited Thailand, where he took time out of the personal trip to dicuss the Billy Graham Scholarship Program and Wheaton's master's degree programs with the leadership of Bangkok Bible Seminary.
Jonathan also preached the Sunday sermon at Streams of Blessings Church in Nonthaburi, Thailand, which he described as a "low economic area outside Bangkok."
Jonathan notes, "It was a 'Father's Day' sermon on the Lord's Prayer, since the day before was the King of Thailand's birthday, their national Father's Day. After lunch, the children were playing, and this image was taken of me with a little girl. The little girl's name in the picture is Tew."

"Last week, about 50 Wheaton students made the trek up to HoneyRock to take several courses for the intensive winter 'Wheaton in the Northwoods' program," says Bethany Wilson '10, who sent this week's image.
"In this photo is the Christian Education Senior Seminar class taught by James Wilhoit," notes Bethany. "We did not actually have the class outside, but we took this silly photo to demonstrate the natural setting of our classroom that week."

"Just last week, it came to my attention that there are at least five men living in Wheaton who are/were Traber 2 RA's," wrote Ryan Buchanan '11 the current Resident Assistant for Traber 2.
"Therefore, I thought we would try to get as many as I could together for a group shot. This is the shot, with Traber in the background... It was a pretty historic moment; I'm not sure anything like that has happened before."
Pictured are, left to right: Ryan Buchanan '11, Will Chester '10, Lee McComb '09, Mark Cragg '08, and Grant Burns '06.
The picture was taken by Kat Haase '89 M.A. '94, the current Residence Director of Smith/Traber Hall.

"This picture was taken during our 1st week of classes at Princeton Theological Seminary," says Lisa Baumert '09, who sent the following reflections with her photo:
"All five of us graduated from Wheaton in 2009 and are enrolled in the MDiv program at PTS (Princeton Theological Seminary).
"Although we were not good friends at Wheaton, since arriving at Princeton Theological Seminary us Wheaton almuni have formed deep friendships, and have become a great source of encouragement to one another in this new place.
"We are finding that our theological education at Wheaton prepared us very well for our studies here at Princeton. The many Godly examples we found at Wheaton, in our professors and peers, of 'faith seeking understanding' are always in the back of our minds as we discover new and challenging ideas here. It is our desire that our studies at Princeton would expand and continue our journey, which began at Wheaton, of serving Christ and His Kingdom."
