This week’s picture was taken on a slightly warmer day in the midst of a cool spring on campus. We join the Psalmist, who said, “I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.” (Psalm 108:3-5)
This Easter week we follow the path of Jesus as he carried out the Father’s plan for the redemption of mankind. Consider this great summary of the work Jesus did on our behalf in Luke 24:44-53, “He said to them, ‘This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.’ Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, ‘This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.’ When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.”

From March 17 to 21, Wheaton hosted the Global Symposium on Experiential Leadership Development on campus. More than 20 delegates from Christian camps in countries such as Russia, Kenya, Jamaica, Brazil, Panama, Costa Rica, India, and Romania came together to promote stronger cooperation between camp ministries and institutions of higher learning. In part through its Outdoor Adventure Leadership Concentration, Wheaton College is a major contributor to the global movement of adventure and camp ministry.
This week’s image shows the opening session of the symposium, where Phillip Ryken, Wheaton College President; Laura Montgomery, Dean of Global and Experiential Learning; and Rob Ribbe, Director of Wheaton’s HoneyRock Camp, greet the delegates and kick off five days of meaningful conversation about the importance and potential of these partnerships.

Each Spring Break more than 100 Wheaton students travel to a variety of locations, both nationally and internationally to serve as a part of Wheaton’s BreakAway Ministry program. This week’s image was submitted by David Malone, Associate Professor of Library Science and co-leader of this year's Spring Break BreakAway trip to the Koinonia Farm in Americus, Georgia. He is pictured here with four students on the Georgia BreakAway team and President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn. The students, pictured from left to right, are: Susie Eichling '14, Sylvi Thorstenson '13, Hannah Pinter '13, Lydia Gantz '14.
David Malone shares, "We went to Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, GA to go to President Carter's church. With our late arrival and the time zone and Daylight Savings Time change we didn't feel we could get to Carter's Sunday school. Well we were able to hear him teach on Luke 15 (Parable of the Prodigal Son) as well as stay for church."
The team spent the rest of the week serving at Koinonia Farm, an intentional Christian community founded in 1942. The Farm has a rich history in the Civil Rights Movement and has played a part in the establishment of many organizations including Habitat for Humanity. For more images of our students serving on BreakAway trips around the world, check out #breakaway13 on Twitter and Instagram.

Steven says that Brandon “ran the Osaka (Japan) Marathon in November where he finished 5th in a time of 2:19:23.” Over 35,000 runners participated in the marathon.
Brandon had been invited to run in Osaka since he was the top male finisher from Illinois in the 2011 Chicago Marathon. The invitation from Japan is part of an exchange of top local runners to promote that Osaka and Chicago are sister cities.

This week’s photo submission comes from assistant professor of Physics, Heather Whitney. “These are five of our physics majors,” says professor Whitney, “at Loomis Laboratory at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, during the 6th Annual Midwest Undergraduate Conference for Women in Physics. About 250 women from the Midwest attended this conference, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The number of women in the field is slowly growing, but for several of these students it was the first time they had been around more than a handful of fellow women in physics at one time.”
Pictured here are, from left to right: Jessica Seckler ’14, Maddie Baltzer ’16, Emily Willson ’16, Rebecca Russ ’13, Mindy Cartolano ’13.

One of the hallmarks of a student’s experience at Wheaton College is the opportunity for interaction with faculty and staff, such as the Dine with a Mind program, which brings professors and students together over a meal in the cafeteria. This week’s photo comes to us from Dr. Melanie Humphreys, Dean of Student Care and Services. She had the opportunity to be a mentor to Rebecca Queen ’13 while Rebecca worked in Student Government. When Melanie heard of Rebecca’s plans to spend a semester in San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala, she was very interested. When Rebecca invited her to visit, Melanie decided to go.
Rebecca says, “Dean Mel came and visited me over Thanksgiving break. During the week that she was there, I took her to visit a disability center and we also did more touristy things around Guatemala. This picture is from a Guatemalan cooking class in Antigua. We made chile rellenos, tortillas, Guatemalan rice, cucumber/radish salad and plantain dessert.”
Rebecca, a psychology major at Wheaton, plans to start a Master of Arts in Counseling at Westminster Theological Seminary next fall. She eventually wants to be able to help refugees adapt to life in the states, as a result of her experiences in Guatemala.

Each year a group of Wheaton alumni get together and ride their motorcycles. This year, the Wheaton Motorcycle Riders went to the Pacific Northwest for some classmate bonding and beautiful scenery. The group’s 12-day odyssey, covering 4,000 miles, included visits to Mt. Ranier, Columbia Gorge, Crater Lake, and much more. Dwight Johnson ’65, who began the trip in Georgia, would travel 7,335 miles through 19 states in 19 days.
During their 12 days together, the Wheaton riders found time to do a little more than ride. Guy Lashlee ’65, is seen here (and also on the far right of the accompanying group photo) diving over 30 feet into the crystal clear and cold waters of Crater Lake, Oregon. Crater Lake is 2,000 feet deep at its deepest point, making it the deepest lake in the United States.

The past year has been filled with many different interesting images sent by students, faculty, staff and alumni of Wheaton College. To start the new year, we take the opportunity to highlight the one image that received the most views in 2012 (over 4,000) on Wheaton College’s facebook page. That photo was sent by David Ko ’14 in August. David ( left), Jeremy Petersen ’14 (middle), and Julie Flaherty ’12 (right), are standing on a rock outcropping called Trolltunga (aka Troll Tongue) in Norway. The trio served this last summer in Bergen, Norway through Wheaton’s Youth Hostel Ministry, part of the Office of Christian Outreach.
Maybe next year at this time you will see your picture posted as the most viewed! Action shots are great, but everything is welcome, even video. To be considered, please send your submission to us at images@wheaton.edu, with your name, relationship to Wheaton College, and an image description.
