Competitions



The Putnam Competition
A national collegiate mathematics competition , is given the first Saturday in in December to well over two thousand students in the U.S., including many of the brightest future mathematicians. The exam is given in two parts, from 9a.m.-noon and from 2-5 p.m. Each part consists of six problems graded on a ten point scale. Partial credit is normally not given. Some practice sessions are usually held in the weeks prior to the competition. Please see Dr. Isihara if you are interested.

The Math Modelling Competition (MCM)
An international competition given usually around the beginning of February of each year. The competition begins Friday morning (12:01 a.m. EST) and continues through the weekend, ending on Monday (11:59 p.m. EST). Contest information is given at the website http://www.comap.com/undergraduate/contests/mcm/ .

The ACCA Calculus Competition
This competition is given each spring semester, and is open to any full-time student. ACCA, or the Association of Colleges in the Chicago Area, consists of about 16 schools. The competition is 90 minutes long and done in teams of three. The questions cover mainly material from our Math 231-2 sequence, with perhaps a bit of vector calculus (Mth 331).
