Colloquium

We introduced a department colloquium in 1997 as a required one hour course for the mathematics major. The purpose is to introduce our majors to the experiences of mathematical exploration, research, problem solving, group work, and oral presentation in an informal setting of about 15 students and department faculty.

Examples of texts used are Journey Through Genius and Euler, the Master of us All by Bill Dunham, What's Happening in the Mathematical Sciences (vol3) ed. by Barry Cipra, Vol 29 MAA Notes Application of Calculus, edited by Phil Straffin. We also devoted one semester's colloquium to learning Maple.

Andrea Vujan had a solution to a colloquium problem published in the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal.

An article by Dr. Brabenec which describes our colloquium course is published in the September 2001 issue of Primus magazine.
