Schedule for OAL concentration courses at HoneyRock
(16 total hours):
November
Program Orientation and Foundations: Students will have a 3-week orientation to HoneyRock involving a week at camp and a two-week wilderness trip. Students may take this experience for credit as CFM 562: Wilderness Leadership and Ministry (4). The program fee for the wilderness trip is $995 not including credit. Students must choose to take this experience for credit or CFM 564 in May. Students will get a week off for Thanksgiving.
December
During the month of December, MA students must take CFM 662: Theology and Practice of Outdoor Ministry (4) for credit. Two weeks of program training for retreat ministry will also be included during this time. Skills training in winter sports such as cross-country skiing, broomball, ice-skating, hockey, tubing and snowshoeing will take place. Students will have a week off for Christmas break. Besides winter skills, students will also learn about hosting groups, retreat program philosophy and planning.
January
MA students will be apply their learning as hosts of various retreat programs for college students, schools and church groups. They will design and implement 3- to 15-day programs for retreat guests. When not working or preparing for groups, students will be assigned to different areas of camp to do special projects. Students are paid for five weeks of ministry during this time.
February
MA students will prepare for and take CFM 563: Church and Outdoor Ministry (4) for credit.
March
At the beginning of March, MA students will have the opportunity to attend the Christian Camp & Conference Association (CCCA) Wisconsin Sectional at their own cost. Students will prepare for and take an intensive Biblical/Theological studies requirement class for 4 hours. The last two weeks of March will be Spring Break.
April
MA students will take CFM 663: Leadership Development in Outdoor Ministry (4). Students will have a week to prepare for class and after the class they will spend a week touring several camps throughout Illinois and Wisconsin.
May
MA students can choose to stay at HoneyRock for an additional two weeks and take CFM 564: Adventure Challenge Education (2/4) for credit. Students must choose to take this course or CFM 562 in November.
June through August
MA students have the option to work at HoneyRock over the summer. Salary is $350/week for ten weeks minus $130/week for room and board. During the summer HoneyRock will serve about 1,000 college students and campers through a variety of different programs. MA students will be assigned roles based on their learning desires and skills and areas of need within HoneyRock. Those wanting to work at HoneyRock during the summer must apply for positions in January to be assured a position.
