Debate Update: Staten and June Walk Over Teammates Morris and Kinde

Julia Staten and Ryan June “walked over” their fellow debaters, Alli Morris and Stephen Kinde, on their way to win the finals at the first of two tournaments hosted at Concordia University, NE. Both teams won their semi-final round, but teammates can not compete against each other in the final round. To declare a winner, Morris and Kinde sacrificed their top position in favor of their teammates, allowing Staten and June to take the win.

Breaking two teams to octofinals at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego in early Janurary, Wheaton debaters competed with the best. The following weekend at Webster College, Bob Kubinec and Camille Barnett broke to octofinals with teammates Abi Perl and Jon Klanderman. At Concordia University, Wheaton teams won semifinals in both tournaments.

Currently ranked 37th in the nation with her partner Stephen Kinde, Alli Morris loves the challenge of debate. “Our coaches are amazing, and this is the best our team has done” recently. Ryan June and Talia Staten are currently ranked 39th in the nation, and Abigail Perl and Jon Klanderman, at 73rd, are contending for an NPTE-qualifying position in the next debate.

Come watch the team in action at this weekend’s Hollatz-Larson Debate Tournament, hosted on-campus Friday, February 15 - Saturday, February 16. Fore more information, contact Tiffany Olson.

Wheaton Thunder Dominates Loyola Debate Tournament

The Wheaton Parliamentary Debate Team travelled to Loyola in early December. Entering one team in the novice division and seven in the open division, three teams managed to advance to outrounds. Several others did not break even, though they had a record of 4-2 going into outrounds. Amy Masburn and Ben Johnson advanced to the quarterfinal round. Juliana Wilhoit and Grant Diamond advanced to the quarterfinal round where they lost on a 2-1 decision. Talia Staten and Ryan June advanced to the semifinal round where they lost on a 2-1 decision. The real highlight was our success in claiming speaker awards. Paul Nelson (a freshman) was named the 5th speaker in the novice division. In an impressive sweep, the varsity claimed six out of the ten individual awards! Congratulations Wheaton Debate!

Varsity Awards:
8th - Stephen Kinde
6th - Allison Morris
5th - Juliana Wilhoit (freshman)
3rd - Grant Diamond (freshman)

1st - Talia Staten
