Graduate Presents Scholarly Paper at National Conference
In addition to concluding her Wheaton College studies, December graduate Marissa Lowe had an eventful November, presenting a scholarly paper to the National Communication Association during its annual conference in San Antonio, Texas, November 16-19, 2006. Lowe, a Rhetoric and Culture concentration student, composed a feminist critique of the movie Bridget Jones’ Diary. The paper observed the disparity between the portrayal of single men and women. Lowe also questioned the power structures inherent in the fim.

Originally written for Dr. Gardner’s Communication Criticism class, Lowe was encouraged by Gardner to submit the paper through the Wheaton chapter of Lambda Pi Eta. Upon examination by three separate reviewers, Lowe’s paper was chosen to be included on a student panel with two other papers. Lowe cited the paper as intensely research-heavy, drawing on skills from several of her previous Communication classes. She highlighted Rhetorical Theory as helpful.
