Did you ever visit the Career Development Center? If so, about how often and how did they help you?
Throughout my four years at Wheaton, I made frequent visits to the Career Development Center. Whether I needed assistance with my resume, interview skills, was searching for internships or a job, the Center offered dedicated staff and resources to encourage and direct me along the way. The Career Development team supported me as a person, as a student-athlete and as a future business woman, and I appreciate their involvement in my career development.
How did you go about finding a job after college?
During my junior year, the Career Development Center invited me to attend their Wheaton in the Loop Alumni Breakfast. At this breakfast, I was introduced to an alumnus who listened to my career aspirations and connected me to his company’s event planner, who ironically is now my current boss. I reached out to simply inquire about event planning, learn if that was a career I desired and to understand what it would take if I wanted to pursue this career. Between my junior and senior year I took her advice and we reconnected in December of my senior year. From December through March, I followed up to inquire about internships and jobs; however, they were not hiring. It wasn’t until the end of March I heard back to learn an internship was available. I was an event intern from April through May and was brought on full time the day after Graduation in 2010.
What advice would you give a current student about finding a job and/or networking?
Prayerfully consider where the Lord is guiding you and understand where you can honor the Lord with your gifts and not for selfish gain. Start early in your college experience by visiting the Career Development Center, attend networking events and follow up on a consistent basis, even if you receive a ‘no’. A follow-up e-mail could be the first step to your future career.
What are you doing in your current job?
As an event coordinator, I plan various client and employee events nationally and globally. It has been an amazing career and I am so thankful for each opportunity that has been presented. I have incredibly talented colleagues that encourage my career development, my character and teach me something new each day.
