The American Red Cross revised its lifeguarding course as of 2007,
PREREQUISITES FOR June 2008 LIFEGUARD CLASS AT WHEATON COLLEGE:
Be at least 15 years old.
Swim 550 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order: *200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or to the front. *200 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence. 150 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke. This 150 yards may be a combination of front crawl and breaststroke. Note: There is no time limit for this test but the participant must not stop during the 550 yard swim.
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yeads back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using ladder or steps, within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Note: When returning to the starting point, the participant must hold the 10-pound object with both hands placing the brick on his or her chest, and must keep his or her face above the water. The participant can swim on his or her back using an elementary backstroke kick, flutter kick or a rotary (eggbeater) kick. The time is complete when the participant has exited the water using his or her own strength and is standing up on the pool deck.
Swim 5 yards; submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 - 7 feet of water; resurface; and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool. Note: While retrieving the dive rings, participants must stay under water.
The above three swimming tests must be successfully completed before the end of the first class session to be admitted into the course.
Successful completion of this course results in certification in American Red Cross CPR/AED, First Aid, and Lifeguard Training
