CACE Events 2002 - 2003

Year Theme:
Liberty, Security, and Dissent

This topic addresses an enduring tension in democracy, and it saturates all human experience from the sciences to literature. We must balance the pursuit of liberty with the need for security. At what point do we relinquish our freedoms? Which security needs trump our desires for liberty? Ought we accept the unfettered human pursuit of knowledge, technological advance, and scientific discovery, or do fundamental issues of personal safety and national defense limit our pursuits? Where and when do we voice our dissent against these limits?
