Professional and Personal Interests
Payday loans - which are short-term, high interest, small loans - have served as a lightning rod for criticism from media outlets, consumer advocacy groups, and state legislators. Rivera's research focuses on the borrowing behavior of payday loan customers, as well as the effectiveness of state laws aimed at protecting financially vulnerable consumers of credit.

Additionally, Rivera is consulting for the Willow Creek Association on a new project launch aimed at assessing and furthering spiritual growth.

Rivera has extensive personal and ministry experience in various domestic urban contexts. He and his wife, Shuree, currently serve as directors for the Young Adult ministry of their church located in the Humboldt Park area of Chicago.
